Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Southern District

Victoria’s dramatic sobbing cut off so abruptly it sounded like she had choked on her own tongue. She blinked, her manicured hand frozen mid-air. ""Captain? What did you just say? Do you know this girl?""

Captain Hayes ignored her entirely. He pulled off his service cap and held it against his chest, his gaze steady and respectful. ""Claire. When my dispatch mentioned a disturbance in Room 412, I had no idea you were the patient. I haven't seen you since the grand jury hearings on the Marcone racketeering case two years ago.""

A heavy, suffocating silence dropped over the room. The two patrol officers straightened up instinctively, recognizing the deference their commanding officer was showing to a woman sitting in a hospital gown.

""It's good to see you under different circumstances, Robert,"" I said, my voice steady, stripped of all vulnerability. ""Though I wish the setting were more professional.""

""Wait just a minute!"" Victoria stepped forward, her voice rising in shrill indignation, her aristocratic entitlement kicking back in. ""Captain, I am Victoria Whitmore. My late husband was Arthur Whitmore of the Whitmore Real Estate Trust. We donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to your police athletic leagues every single year! This girl is my son’s wife. She was an obscure corporate researcher before they married. She has no authority here, and she is currently experiencing a dangerous postpartum episode!""

Captain Hayes turned slowly. When his eyes locked onto Victoria, all the warmth vanished from his features, replaced by the granite stare of a veteran investigator.

""Mrs. Whitmore,"" Hayes said with chilling precision. ""I don't care if you bought the entire precinct house with your late husband's money. The woman sitting in that bed is not an obscure researcher. Before she took extended leave to marry your son, Claire Bennett was a Senior Trial Attorney for the United States Department of Justice, specializing in complex financial crimes, public corruption, and interstate trafficking.""

Victoria's face drained of color, turning the shade of spoiled milk. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

""In fact,"" Hayes continued, his voice echoing in the quiet room, ""the last time Claire and I worked together, she put three state senators and a federal judge behind bars for twenty years. Now, Claire... what exactly is happening here?""

I handed the manila folder directly into Captain Hayes's hands.

""Six hours ago, I delivered twins via emergency cesarean,"" I stated, speaking with the clear, unhurried cadence of a lawyer reading an indictment into the official record. ""Fifteen minutes ago, Victoria Whitmore entered this room carrying a wicker baby basket intended to transport an infant off-site without medical discharge papers. She handed me this document, which purports to be an uncontested surrender of parental rights for my newborn daughter, Lily, transferring custody to Madison Whitmore.""

Hayes opened the folder, scanning the pages with narrowed eyes.

""The signature on page four,"" I continued, ""is a forgery. An unauthorized reproduction of my legal mark intended to circumvent state child welfare laws and federal anti-trafficking statutes. Furthermore, Mrs. Whitmore explicitly stated that if I did not surrender the child quietly, she would use false medical testimony to have me involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility to secure permanent custody of both children.""

Captain Hayes flipped to the signature page. He pulled a pen from his breast pocket, tapping the ink line. ""This is a class B felony under state law, Mrs. Whitmore. And if interstate wires or federal adoption registries were touched, it becomes a federal matter.""

""That's absurd!"" Victoria cried out, her voice cracking as panic finally pierced her arrogant shell. ""It's a family misunderstanding! Daniel handles our affairs! Daniel signed it with her permission! Ask my son!""

""Where is Daniel?"" Hayes barked at the two patrolmen. ""Find Daniel Whitmore. Bring him to this room immediately. And seal this floor.""
