Chapter 5 - The Mastermind in the Nursery

Before Daniel could formulate another excuse, a high-pitched voice echoed from the hallway outside.
""Where is she? Did she sign it? Where is my baby?""
The door swung open once more, and Madison Whitmore bustled into the room. She was thirty-two, dressed in a designer pastel tracksuit, her face flushed with frantic excitement. She wasn't carrying a purse; she was carrying an infant car seat wrapped in a customized pink monogrammed blanket that read: Lily Whitmore.
She didn't look at me. She didn't look at Daniel or the police officers. Her eyes went directly to Victoria.
""Mom, the nurses in the hallway wouldn't let me past the security doors to the nursery! They said the ward is in lockdown! Where is the paperwork? The agency courier is waiting in the parking garage!""
""Madison, shut your mouth right now,"" Victoria hissed through clenched teeth, her face twisted in absolute terror.
Madison finally noticed Captain Hayes, the two patrol officers, and the cold, unyielding atmosphere in the room. Her hands tightened on the handle of the car seat. ""What... what's happening? Why are the police here?""
""Your mother and brother are under active investigation for attempted unlawful custody transfer and grand forgery, Ms. Whitmore,"" Captain Hayes stated flatly. ""And judging by that car seat and your statements regarding an off-site courier, you have just implicated yourself as a co-conspirator.""
""Co-conspirator?"" Madison laughed hysterically, clutching the pink car seat to her chest like a shield. ""Are you insane? This was a gift! Daniel promised me! He promised me six months ago that if Claire had a girl, it was mine! I decorated the entire west wing for her! I bought clothes for the next three years! You can't take this away from me! Claire doesn't even have the money to raise two children properly—she's an orphan living off my family's legacy!""
The sheer, breathtaking entitlement in the room was staggering. To these people, human beings were assets, commodities to be traded, reassigned, or distributed to satisfy family vanity and maintain their illusions of perfection.
""Nurse Evelyn,"" I said, keeping my gaze locked on Madison.
""Yes, Claire?"" Evelyn stepped forward instantly, her maternal instincts fully engaged, her face tight with disgust at what she was witnessing.
""Please notify hospital security to place my children under armed, continuous bedside guard in the special care nursery. Issue an immediate medical red-tag on both Noah and Lily Bennett-Whitmore. No person—including Daniel Whitmore, Victoria Whitmore, or Madison Whitmore—is to be granted physical sight, proximity, or access under any circumstances. If any of them approach the nursery doors, have them arrested for trespassing.""
""Right away, Claire,"" Evelyn replied firmly, turning toward the wall intercom to issue the directive immediately.
""You can't do that!"" Madison shrieked, dropping the car seat to the floor. ""Daniel is their father! He has equal custody rights!""
""Under state statute 402-B,"" Captain Hayes said, stepping directly between Madison and the bed, ""any parent actively under investigation for felony child endangerment or fraudulent custody tampering forfeits immediate unilateral custody rights pending an emergency judicial hearing. Officers, take Ms. Madison Whitmore's car seat into evidence. Confiscate all mobile devices from everyone in this room.""

Victoria backed away toward the corner of the room, her composure completely shattered. ""Captain, think about your career! You touch my phone, and my attorneys will have your badge by breakfast!""
""Mrs. Whitmore,"" Hayes said with a cold, unforgiving smile. ""I answer to the Police Commissioner and the District Attorney. Neither of them take orders from the Whitmore Trust. Now surrender your phones, or my officers will place you in restraints and retrieve them from your designer purses by force.""
