Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

For four agonizing hours, Alexander remained on his knees outside the surgical doors, refusing water, refusing a chair, and refusing to speak to the family captains who arrived at the hospital.

Nathan sat three feet away, watching his childhood friend endure the ultimate purgatory.

At four-fifteen in the afternoon, the red light above the operating doors clicked to green.

Dr. Vance, who had been transferred by private helicopter to lead the emergency procedure, stepped out, pulling down her surgical mask.

Alexander scrambled to his feet, stumbling against the wall, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold himself upright.

"Doctor?" he croaked, his voice barely a rasp.

Dr. Vance looked at the bloody, disheveled billionaire, her expression softening with profound relief.

"The placental abruption was caught in time, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Vance announced gently.

"We administered emergency tocolytic medication to arrest the contractions."

"Your wife and your son are stable."

"The baby is safe."

Alexander closed his eyes, his forehead resting against the cold hospital wall, and let out a broken, shuddering sob that seemed to release five years of poison from his lungs.

"Can I... can I see her?" he whispered.

"Five minutes," Dr. Vance said. "She is exhausted, but she is awake."

Alexander pushed through the doors, stepping softly into the dim, quiet recovery suite.

I lay in the center of the bed, an IV line running into my left wrist, monitors beeping with a steady, rhythmic reassurance beside my pillow.

Under the thin hospital blanket, my rounded belly was still whole, the monitor tracing the rapid, healthy beat of our son’s heart: thump-thump, thump-thump.

Alexander stopped three paces from the bed, his head bowed, looking at me like a condemned man awaiting his sentence.

"Claire," he whispered, his voice trembling.

I looked at him—his torn shirt, his bruised face, his bloodshot eyes that had shed more tears today than in his entire life.

"You came," I said softly, my voice weak.

"I will always come, Claire," he replied, taking a hesitant step forward and sinking onto his knees beside my bed.

He reached out, his trembling fingers hovering over the sheet above my stomach, asking for silent permission.

I nodded gently.

He rested his large, warm palm over our child, feeling the distinct, rhythmic flutter of life beneath the fabric.

A fresh flood of tears spilled over his cheeks, falling onto the hospital blanket.

"I dismantled the Falcone family today, Claire," Alexander whispered, burying his face against the edge of the mattress.

"Carmine Falcone and his captains are in federal custody. Their assets were handed to the United States Attorney an hour ago."

"I signed over all Moretti gaming licenses to a public charitable trust."

"I resigned as Don of Chicago."

I stared at him in utter shock. "You resigned?"

"Power is nothing without you, Claire," he wept, lifting his head to meet my gaze with absolute, unmasked honesty.

"I thought I had to be cold. I thought showing the world I loved you would make you a target."

"I used Sophia as a shield because her family had political immunity, and I was too cowardly to admit that I was terrified of losing you."

"I broke your heart to protect my own stupid pride."

"I don't care about the syndicate. I don't care about the money."

"I just want to be the man who earns the right to hold your hand in the daylight."
