Chapter 1 - The Hallway Standoff

The sterile smell of hospital disinfectant suddenly felt heavy and suffocating in my lungs.

Alexander stood motionless, his tailored charcoal coat hanging open, revealing the dark suit he always wore for business.

His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating enough to silence an entire room of capos, were wide with complete shock.

They remained anchored to the obvious, rounded curve of my six-month baby bump beneath my beige knit dress.

Beside him, Sophia wore a pale pink cashmere coat, holding a leather medical folder against her chest.

Her painted red lips were parted in pure astonishment, her gaze darting between my belly and Alexander’s frozen face.

"Your ex-husband?" Sophia repeated, her voice pitching slightly higher as she tried to break the paralyzing silence.

"Claire, you were married? Alexander, did you know about this?"

Alexander didn't answer her.

He couldn't.

The air between us crackled with a dangerous, suffocating tension that seemed to drop the hallway's temperature by twenty degrees.

Six months ago, he had looked down at me in his private penthouse and warned me that once I walked away, there would be no turning back.

He had believed I was bluffing, that five years of quiet obedience meant I would crawl back the moment my savings ran thin.

Instead, I had packed two suitcases in the dead of night, signed the uncontested dissolution forms, and vanished into the quiet outskirts of Oak Park.

I hadn't taken a single dime of Moretti money.

I had taken only my clothes, my mother's small jewelry box, and the secret forming quietly inside my body.

"Alexander?" Sophia urged, reaching out to touch his arm.

Alexander flinched slightly, pulling his arm away from her touch without even realizing he had done it.

He took a slow, deliberate step toward me, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the white linoleum floor.

"How far along are you, Claire?" he asked, his voice a low, raspy rumble that barely concealed the tremor beneath it.

I instinctively placed one hand protectively over my stomach, taking a half-step back until my shoulders touched the clinic wall.

"That is none of your business, Mr. Moretti," I replied, my voice steady despite the hammering in my chest.

His jaw clenched so hard that a sharp muscle ticked along the side of his cheek.

"Mr. Moretti?" he repeated, the words tasting like poison on his tongue.

"Six months ago, you were sleeping in my bed, Claire."

Sophia gasped, taking a step forward with wide, horrified eyes.

"Alexander! What are you saying?!"

Alexander ignored her completely, his eyes locked onto mine with a terrifying, desperate intensity I had never seen in five years of marriage.

"Six months," Alexander whispered, doing the math in his head as the color drained completely from his face.

"You knew before the banquet."

"You knew the night you threw your ring into the trash."

I didn't blink, and I didn't look away from his piercing stare.

"I found out that morning, Alexander," I told him quietly, my voice ringing clear through the empty corridor.

"I dissolved your stomach medicine, and I was walking to your dressing room to tell you that you were going to be a father."

"Then I saw you taking off your ring in the mirror so Sophia wouldn't see it."

Alexander looked like he had taken a hollow-point bullet straight through the center of his chest.

His hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, his breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches.

"Claire... please," he choked out, taking another desperate step toward me.

Before he could reach me, the examination room door swung open, and Dr. Evelyn Vance stepped out holding my ultrasound charts.

"Claire Bennett?" the doctor called warmly.

"We have your twenty-four-week sonogram ready for you."
