Chapter 10 - The Public Vow

One month later, the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah was filled with golden morning light filtering through stained-glass windows.

There were no armed bodyguards flanking the pews, no corrupt politicians, and no mafia dons whispering in the back row.

Only thirty close friends, former employees who had been granted clean pensions, and Nathan, who stood proudly beside Alexander as his best man.

Alexander stood at the marble altar wearing an immaculate, classic black tuxedo, holding two-month-old Leo in his arms.

The organ began playing a soaring, triumphant arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon in D.

The heavy carved oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung wide open.

I walked down the long, red-carpeted aisle, illuminated by the colored light streaming across the stone floor.

My gown was a masterpiece of flowing ivory silk and delicate lace, sweeping gracefully behind me in a long, cathedral-length train.

My hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, and my face glowed with the radiant, unshakeable confidence of a woman who was loved completely, openly, and without fear.

When I reached the altar steps, Alexander handed Leo to Nathan, stepping down to take both of my hands into his.

His hands were warm, steady, and completely unhurried.

The priest smiled warmly at us, clearing his throat to begin the service.

"We are gathered here today to witness the public union of two souls whose love has walked through the valley of the shadow of death and emerged into the glorious light," the priest declared.

When the time came for our vows, Alexander didn't read from a card.

He looked directly into my eyes, his voice ringing clear, steady, and resonant throughout the vast, vaulted sanctuary.

"Claire, for five years I gave you shadows when you deserved the sun."

"I hid the greatest gift God ever gave me behind lies, fear, and foolish pride."

"Today, before God, our son, and every person in this sacred hall, I declare that my life, my soul, and my honor belong solely to you."

"I promise to hold your hand in the daylight."

"I promise to protect your peace with my last breath."

"And I promise that as long as I live, you will never spend another second wondering if you are loved."

Tears streamed down my cheeks, bright and beautiful in the cathedral light.

"Alexander," I whispered, my voice carrying effortlessly to every pew.

"You tore down your kingdom to build our home."

"You chose our son, you chose truth, and you learned how to stand in the light."

"I choose you today, tomorrow, and for all of eternity."

Nathan stepped forward, holding the velvet cushion with the two silver bands.

Alexander took the ring, sliding it onto my left ring finger; it fit perfectly, cool, solid, and eternal.

I took the matching silver band, sliding it over Alexander’s knuckle, where it settled into place like it had never been removed.

"By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest smiled broadly.

"You may kiss your bride."

Alexander swept his arms around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, and kissed me with a fierce, passionate, breathtaking devotion that sealed our destinies together forever.

The small congregation erupted into thunderous, joyful applause, Nathan cheering loudly as little Leo kicked his tiny feet against his best man's suit.

Alexander pulled back, resting his forehead gently against mine, laughing with pure, unfettered joy.

He turned toward the sanctuary, holding my hand high above his head, interlacing his fingers with mine so that both our silver rings caught the brilliant midday sun.

"Meet my wife, everyone!" Alexander shouted with unbridled pride, his voice echoing off the stained-glass angels above us.

"Mrs. Claire Moretti!"

I laughed through my happy tears, leaning my head against his sturdy shoulder as we walked down the aisle together into the warm southern sunshine.

The shadows were gone.

The secrets were buried.

And the love that had survived the storm was finally, beautifully home.
