Chapter 2 - The Sonogram Truth

Alexander’s head snapped toward the doctor, his eyes locking onto the glossy black-and-white printout peeking from the chart.

"I am coming in with her," Alexander announced, stepping forward with the unquestioned authority of a man who commanded an underworld syndicate.

"Excuse me, sir," Dr. Vance said, stepping firmly into his path, adjusting her reading glasses.

"Only designated partners are permitted in the private consultation suite."

"I am her husband," Alexander growled, his voice dropping into that chilling, lethal tone that usually made men drop to their knees.

"You are my ex-husband, Alexander," I interrupted coldly, stepping past him into the doorway.

"The divorce was stamped and finalized by the Cook County circuit court four months ago."

"You have zero legal rights to my medical records, and you have zero rights to enter this room."

Alexander froze on the threshold, his chest heaving, his dark eyes burning with agonizing helplessness.

For five years, he had kept our marriage locked in the dark, treating our vows like an inconvenient secret he was embarrassed to show the world.

Now, standing in a brightly lit public clinic, the legal reality of what he had thrown away hit him like a concrete wall.

"Claire, don't do this," Alexander pleaded, his voice cracking, completely ignoring the nurses staring from the reception desk.

"That is my child you are carrying."

"This child is mine," I answered, meeting his gaze without a flicker of fear.

"You gave up your right to be a family the moment you walked past me in that hallway to hug another woman."

I closed the heavy wooden door, turning the brass deadbolt until it clicked firmly into place.

Through the frosted glass, I could see his tall silhouette standing motionless, his hand pressed flat against the wood.

"Are you alright, dear?" Dr. Vance asked gently, guiding me toward the cushioned examination table.

"I'm fine, Doctor," I exhaled, sitting down and smoothing my dress over my knees.

"Just an old ghost from Chicago."

Dr. Vance smiled warmly, handing me the ultrasound photographs.

"Well, your baby boy is perfectly healthy. Strong heartbeat, measuring right on schedule at one pound and twelve ounces."

I looked down at the tiny, perfect image of my son, his little fingers curled beside his cheek, and tears welled in my eyes.

A boy.

Alexander had always spoken about having an heir, an older son who would carry the Moretti name with honor and strength.

He had wanted a legacy, but he had thrown away the foundation to chase an old memory.

Outside in the corridor, Sophia’s shrill, frantic voice filtered through the heavy door.

"Alexander! We have an appointment with the fertility specialist on the fourth floor! You promised you would come with me!"

"Go home, Sophia," Alexander’s cold, dead voice replied, echoing off the hallway tiles.

"What do you mean, go home?! Alexander, look at me!"

"I said get in the car and go home," he repeated, the words laced with a terrifying, absolute finality.

"The driver is waiting downstairs."

"And what about you?!" Sophia cried, her voice trembling with rising panic.

"I'm staying right here."

"I am not leaving this door until my wife walks out."
