Chapter 7 - The Master Stroke

Judge Porter did not hesitate. ""Motion for emergency freeze is granted. All accounts associated with Andrew Ellison, Ellison Logistics, and North Star Holdings are frozen effective immediately. Mr. Ellison, you will surrender your passport to the clerk before you leave this room. Any attempt to access offshore funds will be treated as criminal contempt.""

Andrew looked up, his eyes bloodshot, his face drained of all color. ""Mara, please,"" he whispered, his voice cracking. ""Can we just talk about this outside? We don't have to do this in public. We were married for seven years. We loved each other.""

Mara looked down at him. There was no hatred in her eyes, no vindictive pleasure, only the cold clarity of a professional who had completed an objective.

""You loved the silence, Andrew,"" she said quietly. ""You loved having a wife who kept your secrets, fixed your mistakes, and asked for nothing in return. But you forgot that before I was your wife, I took an oath to uphold the law. And I don't break my oaths.""

She turned back to the judge. ""Your Honor, I have one final matter to present regarding the ownership of Ellison Logistics.""

Calder looked up, exhausted and bewildered. ""The ownership? The company is a family corporation owned by Frank and Andrew Ellison!""

""It was,"" Mara corrected him, pulling out tab five. ""Until four years ago, when the company needed a four-million-dollar surety bond to secure the state highway transit contract. The bonding authority required a guarantor with clean credit and unencumbered assets. Frank and Andrew had neither. So, they approached me.""

Andrew’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying realization. He had completely forgotten the paperwork he had signed during that frantic week four years ago when the entire company hung by a thread.

""In exchange for guaranteeing the bond with my personal family trust,"" Mara continued, ""Andrew and Frank executed an irrevocable pledge agreement. Under paragraph twelve of that agreement, any material fraud, intentional asset hiding, or bad-faith dilution of the company's value triggers an immediate, full transfer of voting control to the guarantor.""

Mara looked directly at Andrew. ""You didn't just hide marital assets from me, Andrew. You hid them from the company's operating ledger. You breached the bond covenant. As of nine o'clock this morning, sixty percent of Ellison Logistics belongs to me.""
