Chapter 4 - The Dinner Party Trap

Mara remembered the evening she had discovered the truth. It had happened three months earlier, during the annual Ellison summer gala at the country club. Andrew had been holding court on the terrace, surrounded by local politicians and business partners, boasting about the record quarterly returns of Ellison Logistics.

She had been standing near the buffet, refilling a plate of appetizers for Ruth, who had spent the entire evening complaining that the catering staff didn't know how to slice roast beef properly. When Andrew had stepped away to take an urgent call, his company tablet had remained on the high-top table, vibrating repeatedly.

A text notification had popped up on the illuminated screen: Wire transfer of $850k to North Star Belize confirmed. Account balance now zero. She won't suspect a thing before the filing.

Mara hadn't screamed. She hadn't thrown wine in his face. In the military, panic was the fastest way to lose an objective. Instead, she had memorized the screen, slipped her phone from her clutch, and discreetly photographed the transaction ID while pretending to wipe a spill off the tablecloth.

For the next ninety days, while Andrew believed she was busy agonizing over kitchen renovations and organizing his mother's charity luncheon, Mara had spent her nights in the guest bedroom with a secure laptop. She had utilized every forensic auditing technique she had mastered during her deployments, tracing every wire transfer, shell corporation, and disguised expense account Andrew and his father had set up.

They had assumed she was blind because she was gentle. They had assumed she was helpless because she chose peace over conflict. They had mistaken her silence for ignorance.

""Your Honor,"" Mara said, stepping forward in the quiet courtroom, ""North Star Holdings does not conduct any legitimate business. It has no employees, no equipment, and no physical office. It is an empty receptacle designed to park marital assets until this divorce was finalized, at which point Andrew intended to buy out his parents and dissolve the public company entirely.""

""This is baseless slander!"" Calder shouted, banging his hand on the desk, though his voice lacked conviction. ""These are unverified assertions without a shred of documentary evidence!""

""Tab three, Mr. Calder,"" Mara said softly, gesturing toward the folder now resting on the bench. ""Certified wire confirmations from the central bank clearinghouse, authorized by your client's personal digital signature. And on page fifteen... the corporate registry listing Andrew Ellison as the sole beneficial owner.""
