Chapter 3 - The Ghost Accounts

Mara turned to tab two inside her folder. She extracted a stack of neatly tabbed spreadsheets, each cross-referenced with bank routing numbers and wire transfer receipts.

""Seven years ago, when Andrew and I married,"" Mara explained calmly, ""Ellison Logistics was on the brink of chapter eleven bankruptcy. Frank Ellison’s reckless expansion had buried the family business in three million dollars of predatory debt. The public knew nothing of this, but the creditors were preparing to seize their primary estate.""

In row two, Frank’s face shifted from irritated pink to a mottled, dangerous crimson. He tried to rise, but Ruth clamped her hand down on his forearm, warning him with her eyes.

""To save the company,"" Mara continued, passing copies to the bailiff, ""I liquidated the survivor benefit fund left to me by my late father, along with my own military hazard pay and combat savings—totaling four hundred and eighty thousand dollars. That money was deposited directly into an operating account under the name Ellison Capital Management.""

Calder hurried to his feet, trying to regain his footing. ""Your Honor, even if those historical funds were transferred, they are commingled funds from seven years ago! Without a strict postnuptial tracing agreement, they fall under general marital dissolution, which my client has already offered to settle with a lump sum of fifty thousand dollars!""

""Fifty thousand dollars,"" Mara murmured, letting a cool smile touch her lips. ""Mr. Calder, your client offered me fifty thousand dollars to walk away from a logistics company currently valued at forty-two million dollars—a valuation built entirely on freight contracts I drafted myself during the first four years of our marriage.""

The gallery gasped. Several reporters sitting in the back row began scribbling furiously on their notepads. Ellison Logistics was a major regional employer, and rumors of its dirty laundry spilling out into family court were instantly magnetic.

""Furthermore,"" Mara stated, raising her voice just enough to hold the entire room captive, ""the commingled defense only works when the assets are genuine. What Mr. Calder’s team failed to investigate—or perhaps chose to ignore—is that Andrew did not simply manage those funds. Over the past twenty-four months, Andrew transferred seven point eight million dollars out of our joint operating accounts into three offshore shell companies registered in Belize under the name 'North Star Holdings.'""

Andrew went completely white. He clutched the edge of the mahogany table, staring at Mara as if she were a ghost holding a loaded weapon.
