Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

Judge Porter flipped to the designated page. The courtroom fell into an excruciating silence, broken only by the rustling of paper. Judge Porter’s eyes narrowed as she read the precise account numbers and transaction logs. When she finally looked up, her gaze was cold enough to freeze water.

""Mr. Calder,"" the judge said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, low register. ""Did you review your client's complete financial disclosures before filing your preliminary decree?""

Calder stood frozen. Beads of sweat broke out along his hairline. He turned to look at Andrew, who refused to meet his eyes. Andrew was staring down at his own expensive leather shoes, his chest heaving with shallow breaths.

""Your Honor,"" Calder stammered, wiping his brow with a silk handkerchief. ""We... we were provided with standard summary balance sheets prepared by the company’s internal accounting team. We took those disclosures in good faith.""

""You took them in good faith?"" Judge Porter asked, her eyebrows rising. ""You filed a motion for an uncontested decree, accompanied by a forged signature and an affidavit claiming the total marital estate was worth less than two hundred thousand dollars, while seven million dollars was wired to the Caribbean?""

Ruth could no longer contain herself. She jumped to her feet, her voice shrill and trembling with rage. ""This is an outrage! That money belongs to the Ellison family! My husband built this legacy! That ungrateful little girl came from nothing, and she will leave with nothing!""

BANG!

The gavel struck the block with the force of an explosion.

""Bailiff, remove that woman from my courtroom immediately!"" Judge Porter commanded, pointing an outstretched finger at Ruth.

""You can't do that! Do you know who my husband is?"" Ruth shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating as two uniformed deputies moved toward her aisle.

""I know who you are, Mrs. Ellison,"" Judge Porter replied with frigid composure. ""You are an unruly spectator in direct contempt of court. Remove her now, or I will have her remanded to the county jail for seventy-two hours.""

Frank grabbed Ruth's arm, his face pale and humiliated, pulling her toward the exit doors while the gallery buzzed with shocked whispers. Several local reporters were already typing furiously on their phones. The Ellison family reputation, carefully manicured over three decades, was shattering in broad daylight.
