Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

Daniel’s breath seized in his chest. His eyes dilated until they seemed entirely black, darting from the tiny, curved silhouette of the fetus on the thermal paper to Emma’s calm, glowing face.
""What... what is this?"" he whispered, his vocal cords constricting.
""That was the surprise I carried home in my purse,"" Emma replied, her voice steady and quiet. ""Along with two cupcakes from Miller’s Bakery. One chocolate. One lemon.""
Daniel stared at the photograph, his hands shaking so violently that the paper fluttered against the table. ""You... you were pregnant? That morning?""
""I am pregnant,"" Emma corrected him firmly. ""Fourteen weeks now. The baby is growing perfectly. Strong heartbeat. No complications.""
A sudden, desperate sob tore through Daniel’s throat. He reached out to touch the photo, but Emma pulled it back smoothly, slipping it back into her handbag out of his reach.
""Emma... our baby..."" Tears spilled over Daniel’s unwashed cheeks, pooling in the stubble of his chin. ""Our miracle. We spent years... we spent everything trying for this! Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you scream it at me that day?""
""Because you were too busy discussing nine-foot Christmas trees with another woman,"" Emma said, without raising her voice. ""Because you told me I was a ghost haunting empty nurseries. Because you handed me a fraudulent contract designed to leave me homeless and penniless while your mistress stood in my kitchen.""
""I didn't know!"" Daniel cried out, falling to his knees beside the conference table, entirely abandoning any semblance of dignity. His lawyer reached out to pull him up, but Daniel slapped the hand away. ""Emma, if I had known, I would have thrown Sabrina out that second! I swear to God! I would have done anything! This changes everything!""
""It changes nothing about who you are, Daniel,"" Emma said, looking down at him not with hatred, but with profound indifference. ""A man who only values his wife when she can provide him an heir is not a husband. A man who abandons his partner the moment things become difficult is not a father.""
Marcus Vance cleared his throat, pulling a fresh document from his leather briefcase.
""Pursuant to the laws of this state,"" Marcus announced, ""given the documented abandonment, the diversion of marital assets, and the imminent criminal referrals regarding corporate embezzlement, Ms. Whitmore is petitioning for sole legal and physical custody of the unborn child, with all parental decision-making authority vested exclusively in the mother.""
""No!"" Daniel choked out, clutching the edge of Emma's chair. ""You can't cut me out of my child’s life! I have rights!""
""You surrendered your rights when you used marital funds to finance your mistress’s luxury lifestyle while your wife was undergoing medical procedures,"" Marcus stated coldly. ""We are offering you a global settlement, Mr. Whitmore. You sign the full surrender of any claims to the Oakridge estate, Stonegate Holdings, and future parental claims beyond supervised statutory visitation, and Stonegate will decline to press criminal charges regarding the four hundred thousand dollars stolen for SC Luxe Ventures.""

Daniel looked at Emma. His face was gray, wet with tears, completely broken. ""Emma... please don't do this to me. Don't leave me with nothing.""
""You came into this marriage with nothing, Daniel,"" Emma whispered. ""And you are leaving it with exactly what you brought.""
