Chapter 14 - Two Brothers

Ethan Hale arrived at Vance & Sterling exactly six minutes early.
He came alone.
That surprised Noah.
It surprised Marcus even more.
Emma watched through the conference-room glass as Ethan handed his phone, wallet, keys, and briefcase to security without complaint.
No lawyer.
No assistant.
No bodyguard.
When he entered the room, he looked directly at Emma.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
“Mr. Hale.”
“I appreciate the meeting.”
“I didn’t invite you for coffee.”
“No.”
He sat only after Emma did.
Marcus remained beside her.
Noah stood near the door.
Emma placed the photograph of Clara on the table.
Ethan’s face changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
He stared at the red circle around the baby’s face.
“What is that?”
“You tell me.”
“I’ve never seen it.”
“An SUV registered to Northstar was involved in surveillance near my home.”
Ethan looked toward Noah.
“Which vehicle?”
Noah gave him the plate.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“That vehicle was reported stolen five weeks ago.”
“Convenient,” Marcus said.
“It would be, if I were lying.”
Emma pushed the photocopy of Clara’s birth certificate toward him.
“Someone has access to private documents.”
Ethan stared at it.
Then he said something unexpected.
“My brother.”
No one spoke.
Emma leaned back.
“You have a brother.”
“Half brother.”
“Name?”
“Caleb.”
Marcus’s brows drew together.
“I’ve never heard of him.”
“You weren’t supposed to.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
“My father had another family after prison.”
The silence grew heavier.
“Caleb is thirty-three. My father filled his head with stories about Arthur Whitmore stealing our family fortune, destroying his name, sending him to prison, and leaving us with nothing.”
“Was any of that true?” Emma asked.
“My father stole from pensioners.”
Ethan’s answer came without hesitation.
“Arthur stopped him.”
Marcus studied him.
“You believe that?”
“I know it. I found the records after my father died.”
Emma looked down at the photograph.
“Why didn’t Caleb?”
“He did.”
“And?”
“He decided the records were fabricated.”
Ethan gave a humorless smile.
“Conspiracy is easier than shame.”
Marcus asked, “Why approach Stonegate under Mercer?”
“Because I wanted to buy back properties my father once claimed were his.”
“So your motives weren’t exactly innocent.”
“No.”
Emma appreciated the answer.
Ethan continued.
“But I wanted them legally. Caleb believes Stonegate should be taken.”
“How?”
“I don’t know everything.”
“That isn’t good enough,” Noah said.
Ethan reached into the inside pocket of his suit.
Noah immediately stepped forward.
Ethan stopped.
“May I?”
Noah checked the pocket himself and removed a folded document.
He placed it on the table.
It was a court filing.
Petition for Emergency Guardianship Review.
Emma’s blood chilled.
The petitioner was Daniel Whitmore.
“What is this?” she whispered.
Marcus grabbed the document.
His expression darkened.
“This hasn’t been filed yet. It’s a draft.”
Ethan nodded.
“My brother sent it to me this morning.”
Emma read quickly.
The petition alleged Emma was mentally unstable, paranoid, and placing Clara at risk by surrounding the infant with armed security.
There were references to postpartum anxiety.
Medication.
Psychiatric episodes.
All false.
At the bottom was a proposed supporting affidavit from Daniel.
Emma’s anger rose.
“Daniel denied sending the photographs.”
“He probably didn’t.”
“Then why is his name on this?”
“Because Caleb intends to make him desperate enough to sign.”
Marcus looked at Ethan.
“What does Caleb gain from a custody dispute?”
“Access.”
“To what?”
“Stonegate’s succession structure.”
Emma went still.
Ethan explained.
“Your father’s trust automatically places a temporary voting restriction on Stonegate if the primary beneficiary becomes legally incapacitated or loses custody of a direct minor heir under certain emergency conditions.”
Marcus’s face turned pale.
Emma stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew there were emergency provisions. I never imagined anyone would weaponize them.”
Ethan nodded.
“Caleb did.”
Emma’s mind raced.
“If I were declared unstable…”
“The trust could enter temporary custodial administration,” Marcus said.
“And who becomes administrator?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Ethan finally did.
“The oldest surviving founding-family claimant.”
Emma’s gaze sharpened.
“Hale.”
“Exactly.”
Marcus stood abruptly.
“That clause was meant to preserve the company if both family lines faced catastrophe.”
Ethan looked at Emma.
“My brother intends to manufacture one.”
Emma stared at the draft custody petition.
Daniel had been weak.
Greedy.
Cruel.
But he loved the idea of being Clara’s father.
Caleb Hale intended to turn that weakness into a weapon.
Emma picked up her phone.
“Find Daniel.”
Noah nodded.
Ethan added quietly, “Find him fast.”
Emma looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because Caleb stopped answering my calls two days ago.”
May you like
Ethan’s eyes went cold.
“And when Caleb stops talking, people usually start disappearing.”
