Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Last Bad Decision

Daniel disappeared at 5:16 p.m.

Security footage from the apartment complex showed him finishing his shift, putting on a cheap gray coat, and walking toward the bus stop.

He never reached it.

At 5:18, a dark sedan stopped beside him.

Daniel hesitated.

Then voluntarily entered the passenger seat.

No struggle.

No abduction.

No visible threat.

“He knew the driver,” Noah said.

Emma watched the footage twice.

“Can you identify the car?”

“Rental. Paid with a prepaid card.”

Marcus swore under his breath.

Ethan stood near the wall.

“It’s Caleb.”

“You don’t know that,” Marcus replied.

“I know my brother.”

Emma turned.

“Where would he take Daniel?”

Ethan looked at the frozen frame on the screen.

“Somewhere Daniel feels safe.”

“That doesn’t answer me.”

“Caleb doesn’t start by threatening people. He makes them think he’s solving their problems.”

Emma remembered Sabrina describing Daniel.

Desperate.

Lonely.

Broke.

Humiliated.

He was the perfect target.

At 6:03, Daniel called.

Emma answered immediately.

“Daniel?”

His voice was strangely calm.

“Emma.”

“Where are you?”

“I need to ask you something.”

“Where are you?”

“Would you ever let me see Clara?”

Emma glanced at Marcus.

“Daniel, we have a court order. You know what the requirements are.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“Why are you asking now?”

A pause.

Then another voice sounded faintly in the background.

Male.

Daniel spoke quickly.

“I made mistakes.”

“Daniel, who are you with?”

“I lost everything.”

“Tell me where you are.”

“I could get some of it back.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Caleb Hale.”

Silence.

She knew immediately.

“Daniel, listen to me. He is using you.”

“He showed me documents.”

“Forged documents.”

“He says your father stole Stonegate from his family.”

“Daniel.”

“He says if I help prove you’re unstable, Clara could be placed with me temporarily.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

Emma fought to keep her voice controlled.

“You know I’m not unstable.”

“I know.”

“Then why are we having this conversation?”

Daniel breathed shakily.

“Because I’m her father.”

“You are her biological father.”

The distinction cut deeply.

Daniel went silent.

Emma continued.

“A father protects his child when there is nothing to gain.”

“I could protect her.”

“By signing lies about her mother?”

“No.”

“Then leave.”

“I can’t.”

Emma’s fear sharpened.

“Why?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Because I already signed.”

The room froze.

Marcus grabbed a legal pad.

Emma whispered, “What did you sign?”

“An affidavit.”

Her stomach twisted.

“What did it say?”

“That you became obsessive after the pregnancy. That you threatened me. That you talked about disappearing with Clara.”

“Daniel.”

“I know.”

“Did you swear it was true?”

“Yes.”

Emma closed her eyes.

For one terrible second, she was back in the living room one year earlier, watching Daniel choose Sabrina while their baby’s ultrasound rested unseen in her purse.

Same weakness.

Different weapon.

“How much did he pay you?” she asked.

Daniel began crying.

“Fifty thousand.”

Emma said nothing.

“I’m sorry.”

“No, Daniel. You’re afraid.”

“I am.”

“Good.”

He stopped.

“Because fear may be the first honest thing you’ve brought into this conversation.”

A loud sound came through the phone.

A door opening.

Daniel whispered, “I have to go.”

“Daniel, wait.”

“What?”

“If you still have any part of yourself left that wants to be Clara’s father, prove it.”

“How?”

“Don’t do anything else he asks.”

The line disconnected.

Noah immediately began tracing the call.

Ethan looked at Emma.

“Caleb will file tonight.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not if we discredit Daniel first.”

Emma turned sharply.

“No.”

Marcus stared at her.

“We can show his financial motive, his prior fraud—”

“No.”

“Emma—”

“If Caleb wants Daniel to look desperate and corrupt, destroying Daniel publicly helps him.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You understand.”

Emma looked at the blank phone screen.

“My husband spent years underestimating me because he thought kindness was weakness.”

She set the phone down.

“I’m done making the opposite mistake.”

At 7:41, Noah received the location trace.

An abandoned Whitmore-Hale construction office on the riverfront.

Ethan went pale.

“My father owned that building.”

Emma grabbed her coat.

Marcus blocked her.

“You’re not going.”

“I’m not staying here.”

“This is not a negotiation.”

Emma’s eyes burned.

“Neither is this.”

Noah stepped between them.

“I’ll go.”

Emma turned toward him.

“Bring Daniel back alive.”

Noah nodded.

Then Ethan said quietly, “I’m going too.”

Marcus almost laughed.

“No.”

Ethan looked at Emma.

“If Caleb sees police first, he runs.”

“And if he sees you?”

“He talks.”

Emma understood the danger immediately.

“Why?”

May you like

Ethan’s face became unreadable.

“Because Caleb has spent his entire life trying to prove our father loved him more than me.”
