Chapter 25 - The Proposal Nobody Planned

Ethan Hale proposed to Emma in a grocery store.

It was not intentional.

They had been dating for eighteen months.

Clara was almost two.

Stonegate was stronger than it had been in years.

Daniel lived in Milwaukee and returned twice a month for supervised visits that had gradually expanded into unsupervised daytime visits.

Life had become almost suspiciously peaceful.

Then Clara threw a jar of tomato sauce.

It shattered in aisle seven.

Emma stared at the red explosion across the floor.

Ethan stared at Clara.

Clara stared at everyone.

Then she said, very clearly, “Oops.”

Emma covered her face.

Ethan started laughing.

“Don’t.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You’re not.”

“No.”

A store employee arrived with paper towels.

Emma apologized repeatedly.

Clara pointed at the sauce.

“Mess.”

“Yes,” Emma said. “A very expensive mess.”

Ethan crouched beside her.

“What do we say?”

“Sorry.”

“Good.”

Emma looked down at the two of them.

Ethan in jeans.

Clara wearing one pink boot and one yellow boot because she had refused matching footwear.

Nothing about the moment was elegant.

Nothing was staged.

Nothing looked like the future Emma had once planned.

And she loved it.

Ethan stood.

“What?”

Emma realized she was staring.

“Nothing.”

“Something.”

“I’m happy.”

He froze.

Emma laughed.

“Why do you look terrified?”

“Because I’ve been carrying a ring for six weeks.”

Emma stopped breathing.

The store employee slowly backed away.

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“That wasn’t supposed to come out.”

Emma stared.

“You have a ring?”

“Yes.”

“Here?”

“Yes.”

“In a grocery store?”

“I didn’t plan this.”

Clara clapped.

“Ring!”

Emma began laughing.

Ethan reached into his jacket.

“Since apparently my daughter—”

Emma’s expression changed.

Ethan stopped.

He had never called Clara that before.

Not intentionally.

Not aloud.

His face turned pale.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“Emma—”

“No. Don’t take it back.”

Ethan looked at Clara.

Then back at Emma.

“I love her.”

“I know.”

“I love you.”

“I know.”

He pulled out the ring.

A small antique diamond set in platinum.

Emma recognized it immediately.

“My grandmother’s ring.”

Ethan nodded.

“Marcus gave it to me.”

“Traitor.”

“Absolutely.”

Ethan lowered himself onto one knee beside the broken tomato sauce.

Customers began noticing.

Emma laughed through tears.

“This is ridiculous.”

“Completely.”

“You were supposed to plan something.”

“I did.”

“What?”

“Next Saturday. Oakridge greenhouse. Candles. Dinner. Marcus was going to bring Clara in with the ring.”

“That sounds beautiful.”

“It’s ruined.”

Clara shouted, “Mommy!”

Emma looked at her.

“Yes?”

“Say yes!”

The entire aisle erupted in laughter.

Emma stared at Ethan.

For years, she had believed marriage was a promise that protected love.

Then Daniel taught her promises could be broken.

Ethan taught her something else.

Love was not protected by promises.

Promises mattered because love was demonstrated before they were ever spoken.

“Yes.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Emma laughed.

“Yes, Ethan.”

He stood and kissed her.

Shoppers applauded.

Clara began chanting, “Ring! Ring! Ring!”

Ethan placed the diamond on Emma’s finger.

It fit perfectly.

That evening, Emma told Daniel.

She did it herself.

He was quiet for several seconds.

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

“He’s going to adopt Clara?”

Emma’s chest tightened.

“We haven’t discussed it.”

“Oh.”

“Daniel.”

“I’m okay.”

“Are you?”

“No.”

Honesty.

Still new.

Still valuable.

Daniel continued.

“But I will be.”

Emma sat beside the fireplace.

“You’re her father.”

“I know.”

“Ethan isn’t replacing you.”

“I know that too.”

“Then what hurts?”

Daniel took a long breath.

“That somebody else gets to wake up in the house I threw away.”

Emma understood.

“That house was never the thing you lost.”

“I know.”

He laughed sadly.

“Your father would hate me.”

“My father would’ve sued you first and hated you second.”

Daniel laughed harder.

“So Marcus really is his friend.”

“Very much.”

Before hanging up, Daniel said something Emma never expected.

“Don’t let what I did make you afraid to marry someone good.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“Thank you.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

After the call, Ethan entered carrying sleeping Clara.

Emma held out her hand.

The ring caught the firelight.

“Still yes?” he asked.

May you like

Emma smiled.

“Still yes.”
