Chapter 16 - Blood on the Riverfront

The old Whitmore-Hale development office had been empty for fourteen years.

Its broken windows faced the black winter river.

Graffiti covered the loading dock.

Rust climbed the steel beams.

Noah positioned police two blocks away.

No sirens.

No flashing lights.

Ethan entered alone.

At least that was the plan.

He found Daniel sitting in a dusty conference room beneath a flickering emergency light.

Caleb Hale stood beside the windows.

The brothers looked nothing alike at first glance.

Caleb was shorter, leaner, darker-haired.

But they shared the same gray eyes.

“Ethan,” Caleb said.

“Hello, little brother.”

Daniel looked relieved.

“Thank God.”

Caleb smiled.

“He didn’t come for you.”

Ethan ignored him.

“You sent photographs of an infant.”

“I sent warnings.”

“You stole medical documents.”

“I exposed vulnerabilities.”

“You are threatening a baby.”

Caleb’s smile vanished.

“That baby inherited what should have been ours.”

Ethan slowly removed his gloves.

“No. She inherited what Arthur built after our father nearly destroyed everything.”

“You sound like him.”

“Who?”

“Arthur.”

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“Always defending the saint who put Dad in prison.”

“Dad stole from retirement accounts.”

“According to Arthur.”

“According to bank records.”

“Records Arthur controlled.”

Daniel looked between them.

“This is family therapy now?”

Caleb turned.

“You should be quiet.”

Daniel flinched.

Ethan noticed.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

Caleb answered instead.

“Daniel is here voluntarily.”

Ethan looked at the bruise forming near Daniel’s temple.

“Clearly.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

Daniel suddenly stood.

“I’m leaving.”

Caleb reached beneath his coat.

Ethan moved instantly.

“Don’t.”

Caleb pulled a handgun.

Daniel froze.

Ethan raised both hands.

“You said this was about reclaiming a company.”

“It is.”

“You point that gun at him, it becomes something else.”

“He knows too much.”

Daniel’s face drained.

“You said nobody was getting hurt.”

Caleb laughed.

“And you believed me?”

Daniel’s humiliation became anger.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

The words hit Daniel harder than the bruise.

For once, he heard the exact sentence he had forced Emma to learn.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Give me the gun.”

“No.”

“You’re not Dad.”

Caleb’s jaw clenched.

“Don’t say that.”

“Dad was a thief.”

“Shut up.”

“He ruined our family.”

“SHUT UP!”

The gun swung toward Ethan.

That was Daniel’s opening.

He lunged.

The weapon fired.

The explosion filled the abandoned building.

Daniel collapsed.

Ethan slammed Caleb against the window frame.

The gun skittered across the floor.

Seconds later, Noah and the tactical officers stormed the room.

“POLICE! HANDS!”

Caleb fought until three officers forced him facedown.

Ethan dropped beside Daniel.

Blood spread across Daniel’s coat.

“Where are you hit?”

Daniel stared down in shock.

“Shoulder.”

Noah pressed gauze to the wound.

“Through-and-through. Stay still.”

Daniel gritted his teeth.

“Emma.”

“She’s safe.”

“No.”

He grabbed Ethan’s sleeve.

“Tell Emma the affidavit is in Caleb’s bag.”

Police recovered the bag.

Inside were forged medical reports, surveillance photographs, financial records, and the signed affidavit.

More importantly, there was a digital recorder.

Caleb had recorded every meeting with Daniel.

Including the moment he offered fifty thousand dollars for false testimony.

Including Daniel asking whether Emma would lose custody.

Including Caleb saying:

Only long enough for the trust to transfer.

By midnight, the emergency guardianship scheme was dead.

Caleb Hale was in federal custody.

Daniel was in surgery.

Emma stood outside the hospital recovery unit while Marcus spoke with prosecutors.

She did not know why she had come.

Maybe because Daniel was Clara’s biological father.

Maybe because some chapters deserved endings witnessed in person.

A nurse finally allowed her inside.

Daniel looked pale beneath the hospital lights.

His shoulder was bandaged.

When he saw Emma, tears filled his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma remained near the door.

“I know.”

“I signed it.”

“I know.”

“I wanted money.”

“I know.”

“I wanted Clara.”

Emma’s face tightened.

Daniel shook his head.

“No. That came out wrong.”

“It usually does.”

He almost smiled.

Then his expression crumbled.

“I wanted to matter to somebody again.”

Emma said nothing.

Daniel stared at the ceiling.

“I think that’s why I destroyed everything.”

For the first time, there was no excuse attached.

No Sabrina.

No pressure.

No fertility treatments.

Just truth.

Emma walked closer.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“You saved Ethan’s life tonight.”

“I almost got him killed first.”

“Yes.”

Daniel swallowed.

“Does that count for anything?”

Emma thought about it.

“It counts for exactly what it was.”

He nodded slowly.

Not forgiveness.

Not redemption.

But something.

A beginning, perhaps.

May you like

Daniel closed his eyes.

And for once, he asked for nothing more.
