Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

Forty-eight hours after the gala, I sat across a scarred laminate table in the visitor's room of the county detention facility.
Daniel sat opposite me in an orange jumpsuit that was two sizes too large. The designer haircut he maintained every two weeks was disheveled; his chin was covered in dark, patchy stubble. The arrogance that had defined his carriage for seven years had entirely vanished, replaced by the hollow, sunken look of a man who realized the walls were closing in permanently.
""Why are you here, Serena?"" he asked, his voice shaking. ""Are you here to gloat? To see me like this?""
""I'm here to deliver the divorce petition,"" I said, sliding a manila folder across the plastic partition. ""Along with the asset forfeiture agreement.""
Daniel didn't look at the papers. He stared at my hands. I had removed my diamond wedding band; the pale indention on my finger was already fading.
""You ruined my life,"" he whispered, venom suddenly surfacing in his tone. ""You could have handled this behind closed doors. You could have let me step down quietly! My firm is bankrupt. Every client has canceled their contract. Camille’s father is suing me for fraud. I am facing ten to fifteen years in federal prison!""
""You ruined your own life the day you decided that the money meant for abused women belonged in your mistress’s trading portfolio,"" I replied evenly. ""You thought I was weak, Daniel. You thought because I forgive people, because I work in charity, that I don't know how to fight.""
""I loved you!"" he shouted, leaning against the table until the guard near the doorway touched his baton warningly. Daniel slumped back, breathing heavily. ""At the beginning, I loved you. But you became... consumed by Harbor House. You never had time for me. Camille made me feel important. She made me feel like a king.""
""A king who steals from his wife’s pocketbook to pay for dinner,"" I mocked gently. ""Camille didn't make you feel like a king, Daniel. She flattered your vanity, and in return, you handed her the keys to my life's work. How is that working out for you now? Have you spoken to her since you were both booked?""
Daniel flinched. He looked down at the tabletop, his lower lip trembling slightly. ""She... her lawyers filed a motion yesterday claiming I coerced her into signing the transfers. She’s trying to cut a plea deal to testify against me.""
I leaned back in the plastic chair, feeling a deep, settled sense of finality. ""Of course she is. What did you expect from a woman who assaults people in dressing rooms? Loyalty?""
I tapped the manila folder. ""Sign the papers, Daniel. You sign over your remaining fifty percent equity in Blake & Associates to Harbor House’s endowment fund, you surrender the house, and you agree to full restitution. If you sign, my forensic team will share our evidence with your public defender showing that Camille co-managed the Cayman account, which might save you five years off your mandatory minimum. If you don't sign, I hand Clara Hastings the files on your tax evasion from 2022.""
Daniel looked at the pen resting on the table. His hand trembled as he reached for it. With a few rapid, jagged strokes, he signed his name on the dotted lines, stripping himself of every asset, every title, and every shred of authority he had ever held over me.

When he finished, he pushed the folder back. ""Are you happy now?""
I stood up, gathering the documents. ""I'm not happy, Daniel. But for the first time in seven years, I am free.""
