Chapter 3 - The Long Walk to the Wings

The hallway outside the suite was silent, smelling of floor wax and expensive floral arrangements. Maya walked three paces ahead of me, her walkie-talkie pressed to her ear, coordinating with the backstage manager. Behind me, Daniel trailed like a ghost, his handsome face drained of all color, his bow tie slightly crooked. Camille had refused to leave the room until Evelyn politely informed her that two off-duty police officers were waiting in the service corridor to escort her to the precinct for physical assault.
Every step I took in my ripped, makeup-stained gown felt heavier than the last, but my spine refused to bend. The jagged hem swished against my shins.
""Serena,"" Daniel pleaded again, catching up to my shoulder as we reached the heavy double doors leading to the backstage wings. His voice was cracked, stripped of every ounce of that rehearsed confidence. ""If you do this, there is no coming back. We are finished. Our entire life together is over.""
I stopped and looked at him. Really looked at him. ""Our life was over six months ago when you sat across from me at our anniversary dinner, smiled into my eyes, and wired two hundred thousand dollars of Harbor House’s winter shelter fund to Camille’s shell company in Delaware. You didn't just betray our vows, Daniel. You stole beds from homeless mothers to buy jewelry for a woman who despised me.""
""I was going to put it back!"" he stammered, his eyes darting frantically down the corridor. ""It was an investment. Camille’s father had an insider play on the waterfront development. We were going to triple the money and replace it before the year-end audit!""
""Fraud is always justified by the thief until the handcuffs click,"" I said calmly. ""And you didn't invest it. Camille lost sixty percent of it on leveraged crypto options four days ago. That’s why she came to my dressing room tonight, Daniel. She wasn't marking her territory. She was desperate. She wanted to provoke me into an argument so you could claim I was emotionally unstable and have me removed as managing trustee before Monday's board vote.""
Daniel froze. His jaw dropped. He turned around, staring back down the empty hallway toward the suite where Camille had been detained. ""What? No... she said... she told me the portfolio was secure.""
I offered him a sad, pitying smile. ""She lied to you, Daniel. Exactly the way you lied to me. Did you really think a woman who would help you rob your wife would be honest with you about the loot?""
The backstage manager, a young woman with a headset and a clipboard, threw open the doors. ""Serena Blake! Three minutes to your intro. The video reel is already playing!""
The deep, resonant voice of the master of ceremonies boomed through the monitors overhead: ""...a woman whose relentless dedication has provided over ten thousand safe nights of shelter across this tri-state area. Tonight, we honor the visionary founder of Harbor House, Serena Blake!""
The roar of eight hundred guests applauding rumbled through the floorboards beneath my feet. Daniel reached out a trembling hand to stop me, his fingers brushing my wrist.

""Serena, please. Don't destroy me.""
I pulled my arm away without looking back. ""You destroyed yourself, Daniel. I’m just turning on the lights.""
