Chapter 1 - The Nineteen-Minute Countdown

""No,"" I repeated, my voice steady, slicing through the air like cold steel.

Daniel took a half-step toward me, his hand instinctively rising in that placating, manipulative gesture he had practiced throughout our seven years of marriage. He wanted to smooth it over. He wanted to minimize the assault into marital friction. But the heavy, greasy foundation was still trickling off the scalloped neckline of my bespoke ivory gown, dripping onto the plush cream carpet of the suite. My scalp throbbed where Camille’s manicured fingers had yanked my hair, yet the physical sting was entirely eclipsed by the glacial clarity settling over my mind.

Evelyn Grant, whose foundation held the purse strings to Harbor House’s future multi-million-dollar grants, did not look away from me. Her gaze moved slowly from the dripping beige puddle on the carpet to Camille, who suddenly looked very small despite her sneer, and finally to Daniel. Evelyn wasn't just a philanthropist; she was a woman who had navigated three decades of corporate boardrooms. She knew the stench of calculated malice when she saw it.

""Maya,"" I said quietly, addressing my operations director who stood pale and shaking by the door. ""Lock the outer suite door behind you. Nobody leaves this room until security arrives.""

""Serena, let's not be dramatic,"" Daniel hissed under his breath, stepping close enough for me to smell his expensive cologne—the scent I used to associate with safety. ""We have eight hundred donors sitting out there. The mayor is at Table Four. You’re going to cause a scene and humiliate both of us.""

""You lost the right to worry about humiliation the second you let your girlfriend touch me,"" I replied, staring directly into his hazel eyes. For the first time in years, I didn't see the charming, supportive architect who had helped me design Harbor House’s shelter blueprints. I saw a hollow, parasitic shell of a man who had ridden my social coattails while quietly bleeding my life dry.

Camille tossed her hair, leaning back against the marble vanity with forced nonchalance. ""Go ahead, call security, Serena. Tell them whatever fairy tale you want. You think anyone cares about a ruined dress? Daniel is the vice-chair of the board. My father runs the development syndicate. Who do you think this room believes—the frantic wife losing her mind, or us?""

I didn't answer Camille. I didn't need to. I turned toward Evelyn Grant. ""Evelyn, I owe you an apology for this display, but I will not be hiding in the back room tonight. Do you remember the audit reports we discussed over coffee last Tuesday? The discrepancies in the capital expenditure fund for the North Shelter project?""

Daniel went rigid. The color instantly drained from his jawline. ""Serena, this is neither the time nor the place—""

""I have nineteen minutes before I am scheduled to step onto that stage,"" I cut him off, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the unwavering authority that had allowed me to build an empire out of a church basement. ""Maya, hand me my tablet from my briefcase. And call the AV tech booth in the main ballroom. Tell Marcus to load the secondary presentation file on the encrypted USB drive I gave him this morning.""

Daniel’s pupils dilated. ""What secondary file?""

I walked past him, feeling the heavy silk of my ruined dress brush against his tuxedo leg. He reached out to grab my forearm, but Maya stepped directly between us, holding up a sleek black tablet. Camille’s smug smirk vanished entirely, replaced by a sudden, sharp frown of apprehension.

""You thought this was about your affair, Daniel,"" I whispered, unlocking the tablet screen with my thumb. ""You thought I spent the last three weeks crying in the guest bedroom because you were sleeping with Camille. You thought I was weak because I kept my mouth shut while you packed your weekend bags for 'business retreats.'""

May you like

I turned the tablet screen toward him. Displayed on the glass were forty pages of forensic accounting records, international wire transfers, and shell corporation registrations under the name C&D Holdings LLC.

""I wasn't crying, Daniel. I was subpoenaing bank records.""
