Chapter 4 - The Lights Come Up

The transition from the dim, industrial backstage area to the blinding brilliance of the stage lights was blinding. The moment I crossed the perimeter of the curtain, the applause reached a deafening crescendo. Eight hundred wealthy donors, civic leaders, politicians, and community advocates stood on their feet, clapping enthusiastically.

Then, a sudden, collective hush rippled through the front tables.

Table One, where the mayor and his wife sat, went completely still. Table Two, filled with Harbor House’s primary corporate sponsors, leaned forward in disbelief. The cameras mounted on the rolling tracks along the front of the stage zoomed in, projecting my image onto the massive twin 4K LED screens flanking the stage.

There I was, twenty feet high on high-definition displays: hair wildly tumbling over one shoulder, sleeves ripped from my gown, hemline jagged and frayed, and the entire front of my white silk dress smeared with an ugly, thick, dripping cascade of makeup.

The applause died away, replaced by an uncomfortable, confused murmur that swelled across the vast room. I saw people whispering behind their cloth napkins. I saw board members glancing around anxiously, looking for Daniel, who was frozen in the stage left wings, paralyzed under the glow of the exit sign.

I walked steadily toward the polished wooden podium. My heart was pounding, a violent rhythm against my ribs, but my hands did not shake as I rested them on the edges of the lectern.

I leaned into the microphone.

""Good evening,"" I said. My voice echoed cleanly through the state-of-the-art sound system, ringing with pure, unyielding confidence.

The room went pin-drop silent. You could have heard a glass drop from the back row.

""I know what you are all looking at,"" I began, gesturing down at the ruined silk against my body. A nervous chuckle rippled through a few tables, then died instantly. ""You are looking at my dress. You are wondering why the woman being presented with the Civic Leadership Award looks like she just crawled out of an assault.""

I paused, letting the word assault linger in the air. At Table Four, Camille’s father, Marcus Vance, sat upright, his brow furrowing as he set down his wine glass.

""Ten minutes ago, in the private dressing suite backstage, a woman entered my room,"" I continued, speaking clearly, projecting every syllable. ""She grabbed me by the hair, dragged me backward, and poured an entire bottle of cosmetic foundation over my clothes. And standing in the open doorway, watching it happen with complete indifference, was my husband, Daniel Blake.""

A collective, horrified gasp sucked the air out of the grand ballroom. Several people literally stood up from their chairs to get a better look at Daniel, who was desperately trying to shrink back behind the velvet curtain in the wings.

""Camille Vance did that because she wanted to humiliate me,"" I said, pointing directly toward Marcus Vance’s table. ""She wanted me to be too ashamed, too broken, and too vain to walk onto this stage tonight. She believed that by destroying my appearance, she could silence my voice.""
