Chapter 8 - The Total Foreclosure

Grant looked like a cornered animal. Sweat was pouring down his temples, ruining his expensive collar. His hands were trembling violently.
""Shut up, Lauren!"" Grant screamed, completely losing his veneer of composure. ""Shut your mouth!""
Barbara stood frozen in the center aisle, her mouth hanging open in horror as the reality crashed down upon her. ""Grant... what is she talking about? What is Nevis? What did you do?""
""He didn't just commit bank fraud, Barbara,"" I said, turning to look at my mother-in-law for the first time. ""Grant forged my name to borrow $2.4 million against my father's property. He used $800,000 to cover his bankrupt projects, and wired the remaining $1.6 million into an offshore account he shares with Lauren Hayes. They were planning to abandon this company, abandon you, and leave me holding the bag for millions in defaulted debt.""
Barbara stared at her son, her face turning pale green. ""Grant... tell me this isn't true. Tell me she's lying!""
Grant didn't answer his mother. He couldn't. His eyes were wide, darting frantically toward the exit, but the federal officers were already blocking the doorways.
""You can't do this, Jenna,"" Grant whispered, stepping toward me with outstretched hands, his voice cracking into desperate pleading. ""I did it for us! For our family! The company was in trouble. I needed to bridge the gap until the market turned around! You're my wife! You can't let them arrest me!""
""Yesterday morning, you stood in our kitchen and told me I was a worthless freeloader,"" I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the microphone on the stage. ""Yesterday afternoon, you cut off my cards and laughed while your eight-month-old daughter sat hungry in a supermarket checkout, telling me it would teach me obedience.""
A wave of disgust washed through the room. Several prominent businessmen in the front row shook their heads in revulsion, turning their backs on Grant.
""I was angry! I wasn't thinking!"" Grant cried out, dropping to one knee right in front of me, grabbing at the fabric of my trousers. ""Please, Jenna! Call off the lawyers! You have millions in the trust! Just pay off the bank loan! We can fix this! Think of Josie! She needs her father!""
I stepped back, pulling my leg away from his grasp as if dodging a viper.
""Josie needs a father who doesn't use her food as a weapon to abuse her mother,"" I said with chilling finality. ""And as for your company, Grant... you don't even own it anymore.""
Howard Sinclair stepped forward, laying a thick red-bound ledger on the presentation table.
""Three years ago, Walter Whitaker purchased the entirety of Holloway Construction’s senior debt through Vanguard Holdings,"" Howard announced to the room and the assembled media. ""Under Section 9 of the master credit facility, any criminal indictment, material fraud, or insolvency event triggers immediate foreclosure and transfer of all voting shares, operational control, and proprietary assets to Vanguard Holdings.""
Howard looked at me and nodded.
May you like
""Jenna Whitaker Holloway is the sole owner and chief executive officer of Vanguard Holdings,"" Howard continued. ""As of twelve minutes ago, Grant Holloway has been formally terminated as CEO of Holloway Construction. He holds zero ownership, zero equity, and has no legal authority to enter these premises.""
Grant stared up at me from the floor, completely shattered. The golden boy of Scarsdale, the arrogant patriarch who thought he could control his wife with an empty debit card, was now penniless, jobless, and ruined in front of the entire business community of New York.
