Chapter 1 - The Counterfeit Wife

The parking lot outside the Scarsdale grocery store felt like an interrogation room under the gray autumn sky. Josie was tugging at the edge of her fleece blanket, cooing softly as I pressed the phone against my ear with a grip so hard my knuckles turned white.

""Daniel,"" Howard demanded through the speaker, cutting through the banker's hesitation. ""Give her the notary's name. Right now.""

Daniel Mercer cleared his throat. ""The notary commission on file belongs to an administrative officer registered with Holloway Construction. Her name is Lauren Hayes.""

My breath hitched in my throat. Lauren Hayes. She was Grant’s personal executive assistant, a young woman he had hired seven months ago. I remembered her clearly: poised, quiet, wearing designer suits that seemed far too expensive for an entry-level administrative salary. Grant had insisted she was indispensable for organizing his site contracts.

""Lauren notarized it,"" I whispered, the puzzle pieces clicking together with terrifying speed. ""Which means Lauren certified that I stood before her, showed her my government ID, and signed over my father’s assets.""

""Not just that,"" Daniel added grimly. ""We reviewed the security footage from the private loan signing suite at our White Plains commercial branch. A woman entered with your husband on that afternoon. She carried a New York driver's license bearing your name, address, and birth date. She looked roughly your age, with dark blonde hair and sunglasses. She signed the paperwork as Jenna Whitaker Holloway.""

A cold sweat broke out across my ribs. ""Someone impersonated me. In a corporate bank.""

""It gets worse, Jenna,"" Howard interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. ""The $2.4 million loan wasn't just guaranteed by your general credit. Grant pledged the deed and ownership shares of the Whitaker Logistics Center in Newark. That warehouse facility belongs entirely to your sole-beneficiary trust. Grant somehow obtained a forged corporate resolution naming Holloway Construction as a managing partner with hypothecation authority.""

""My father spent fifteen years building that logistics hub,"" I said, my voice shaking with sudden, blinding fury. ""Grant knew it was off-limits. He knew my father specifically protected it.""

""He knew,"" Howard agreed. ""And he also knew Holloway Construction was hemorrhaging money on three suburban developments that went over budget. He was facing immediate liquidation unless he injected fresh capital. But by using forged documents to encumber trust assets, he crossed into federal bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Jenna, this is no longer a marital spat about groceries. This is a criminal conspiracy.""

I looked down at Josie. Her tiny fingers reached up, curling around my thumb. She looked up at me with absolute, unwavering trust. Grant had left us here with empty cupboards and canceled cards just to prove his dominance, all while using my stolen identity to keep his hollow empire afloat.

""What do we do, Howard?"" I asked, my voice suddenly deadly calm.

""First, do not go back to that house unarmed,"" Howard said. ""I am sending a private security detail and a forensic legal team to meet you. Second, Mercer is flagging the loan file internally for bank fraud investigation, but we won't freeze the accounts just yet. If Grant realizes we know, he'll attempt to move liquid funds offshore. We need him confident. We need him completely unaware until the trap springs.""

""How long do you need?""

""Twenty-four hours to pull the certified bank camera footage, the original notary logbook from Lauren Hayes's desk, and the complete audit trail of where that $2.4 million went,"" Howard said. ""Can you play the submissive wife for one evening?""

May you like

I looked at the supermarket doors. Inside, my daughter's baby formula sat abandoned in a brown paper bag behind the customer service counter.

""I won't just play along, Howard,"" I whispered, cold resolve hardening my chest. ""I will make him think he has won completely.""
