Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

At eight in the morning, the master bedroom was filled with bright, sharp sunlight. Grant was standing in front of his full-length mirror, adjusting the cufflinks on a crisp white bespoke shirt. He checked his reflection, radiating arrogance.

""I have a massive investor meeting in White Plains this morning,"" he said without turning around, admiring his silhouette. ""If everything goes as planned, Holloway Construction will double in value by the end of the quarter. I might even consider getting you that new SUV you asked for—assuming your attitude continues to improve.""

I sat at the vanity, brushing my hair. ""That sounds like a momentous day for you, Grant.""

""It is,"" he said smugly. ""It takes vision to play in the big leagues. Something your father never understood in his final years. He was too conservative. Too terrified of real leverage.""

""My father understood leverage better than anyone you've ever met,"" I said softly.

Grant scoffed, picking up his wallet and keys from the dresser. ""Whatever you say, Jenna. There's fifty dollars cash on the counter for today. Don't spend it all on organic baby food.""

He strode out of the bedroom, whistling a light tune. Downstairs, I heard the heavy front door click shut, followed by the deep roar of his Porsche backing out of the driveway.

Fifteen minutes later, Barbara appeared in the kitchen, dressed in an extravagant tweed suit, her purse dangling from her elbow.

""I'm riding into White Plains with a friend to watch Grant speak,"" she announced, looking down her nose at me while I fed Josie her morning cereal. ""It’s a pity you don't have the social poise to stand beside him at events like this. A man in Grant’s position needs an asset, not a dependent anchor dragging him down.""

""Have a wonderful time at the presentation, Barbara,"" I replied calmly, wiping Josie’s chin. ""Make sure you get a front-row seat. You won't want to miss a single second.""

Barbara frowned, slightly unsettled by my total lack of irritation. ""You're acting strange today. Just make sure the house is spotless when we get back. We'll be hosting a celebratory champagne toast tonight.""

""I guarantee today will be entirely unforgettable,"" I said.

Once Barbara's car disappeared down the avenue, a sleek black Mercedes sedan pulled into our driveway. Two men in dark suits stepped out, accompanied by an older woman in professional nursing scrubs.

The driver opened the door for Howard Sinclair. He walked up the front steps, carrying a thick leather briefcase, his silver hair neatly combed and his expression granite-hard.

""Jenna,"" Howard greeted me warmly. ""This is Mrs. Gable, one of our estate's vetted private pediatric nurses, and two licensed security officers. They will remain here with Josie inside the secured perimeter until we return.""

I looked at Mrs. Gable, who offered a warm, reassuring smile. ""I'll take exceptional care of her, Mrs. Holloway.""

I handed Josie to her, kissing my daughter’s cheek. ""Mommy will be back soon, baby.""

I walked into my closet and bypassed the soft sweaters and domestic outfits I had worn for the past eight months. Reaching into the back, I pulled out a tailored charcoal-gray Armani power suit, crisp Italian leather pumps, and my father’s vintage gold Patek Philippe watch.

When I stepped into the foyer, Howard looked at me, a rare smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

""You look exactly like your father before an acquisition,"" he said.

""Let's go to White Plains, Howard,"" I said, sliding on dark sunglasses. ""I have a company to collect.""
