Chapter 7 - The Paper Trap Snaps Shut

Grant let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh, glancing around the room at the confused faces of thirty wealthy investors.
""Ladies and gentlemen, please forgive my wife,"" Grant said into the microphone, attempting to recover his composure. ""She’s been dealing with personal stress at home. Jenna, honey, let's step outside into my private office and discuss this like adults.""
""We are adults, Grant. And this is a corporate meeting,"" I replied coldly. ""You just presented the Newark Logistics Center as Holloway Construction’s newest secured asset. But that facility is held exclusively under the Walter Whitaker Sole Beneficiary Irrevocable Trust. You hold zero equity. You hold zero management rights. And you hold zero authority to encumber it.""
Lauren stepped forward quickly, clutching her iPad to her chest, her voice shrill. ""Mrs. Holloway, that's entirely incorrect! The legal partnership agreements were executed and notarized three weeks ago! The bank approved the entire collateral package!""
I turned my head slowly, fixing Lauren with a look so sharp she visibly shrank back.
""Ah, yes. The notarization,"" I said smoothly. ""Executed by you, Lauren. Certifying that Jenna Whitaker Holloway appeared before you in White Plains while I was sitting four hundred miles away at Boston Children’s Hospital with my sick infant daughter.""
A collective gasp rippled across the room. Several journalists immediately raised their phones, recording every second.
Lauren’s face drained of every drop of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.
""What are you talking about?"" Grant snapped, dropping the microphone onto the podium with a deafening screech of feedback. His voice cracked. ""You don't know what you're saying! Security! Get these people out of my boardroom right now!""
""Security will not be assisting you today, Mr. Holloway,"" Daniel Mercer announced, stepping onto the dais beside Grant. He held up his official credentials. ""I am Daniel Mercer, Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending. Two hours ago, our fraud oversight committee determined that the loan documentation submitted for the $2.4 million credit facility was entirely fraudulent.""
The room erupted into chaotic whispers. Several investors stood up, clutching their briefcases in alarm.
""That's a lie!"" Barbara shrieked, marching toward the stage, shaking her finger at Mercer. ""My son is an honorable businessman! His wife is just an ungrateful, jealous housewife trying to tear him down because he controls the money!""
""Be quiet, Barbara,"" Howard Sinclair commanded, stepping forward with the authority of an apex predator. He pulled a court-stamped document from his briefcase. ""I am Howard Sinclair, managing trustee of the Whitaker Estate. As of nine-fifteen this morning, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York issued an immediate asset freeze and seizure warrant covering all domestic accounts, corporate facilities, and liquid reserves belonging to Grant Holloway and Holloway Construction.""
Grant stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the conference table. ""A... an asset freeze? That's impossible. I have payroll due tomorrow! I have three active job sites!""
""Not anymore, Mr. Holloway,"" one of the federal marshals stated, stepping onto the stage. ""Furthermore, the New York State Department of State has issued an emergency suspension of Lauren Hayes’s notary commission pending criminal investigation into felony document falsification and impersonation.""
Lauren dropped her iPad. It shattered loudly against the floorboards. She collapsed into one of the leather executive chairs, burying her face in her hands, weeping uncontrollably.

""Grant!"" Lauren sobbed hysterically. ""You told me she would never check! You swore she didn't know anything about finance! You told me we'd be in Nevis before the audit caught up!""
Every head in the room whipped toward Grant.
