Chapter 3 - The Scent of Perfume and Betrayal

At seven-thirty, the front doorbell chimed. Grant practically rushed to the foyer to open it himself.

Lauren Hayes walked into our home carrying a leather portfolio. She wore a cream cashmere sweater that looked suspiciously high-end, paired with tailored trousers and a delicate gold Cartier love bracelet on her wrist. I recognized the bracelet immediately; three weeks ago, a $7,200 pending charge from Cartier had briefly appeared on our joint credit statement before Grant hastily categorized it as a ""client appreciation expense.""

""Good evening, Mr. Holloway,"" Lauren said smoothly, stepping into the foyer. Then she turned to me, offering a polite, almost pitying smile. ""Mrs. Holloway. I hope I'm not intruding on family dinner.""

""Not at all, Lauren,"" I replied, maintaining a calm, welcoming expression. ""Grant mentioned you had urgent paperwork that couldn't wait until morning.""

""Construction never sleeps,"" she said with a rehearsed laugh.

As she walked past me into the dining room, a wave of perfume trailed behind her—Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. It was the exact scent I had smelled lingering on the passenger headrest of Grant’s Porsche two weekends ago, which he had blamed on an air freshener sample given out at the car wash.

Dinner was a masterclass in arrogance. Barbara dominated the conversation, singing praises of her son’s business genius while tossing subtle barbs my way.

""Grant just closed a massive expansion facility in New Jersey,"" Barbara boasted, cutting into her steak. ""The bank practically threw millions at him because of his reputation. That’s what real leadership looks like, Jenna. It’s a shame your father’s old business circles never gave Grant the respect he deserved.""

I looked across the table at Grant. He caught my eye and smirked, taking a slow sip of his wine. ""Well, Mom, sometimes you have to know which doors to push open. Some assets are just sitting around waiting for someone with real vision to utilize them.""

""And Lauren has been an absolute godsend,"" Barbara continued, patting Lauren’s hand affectionately. ""A loyal, hardworking woman who actually understands finance. Not like some people who think their only job is decorating nurseries.""

Lauren smiled demurely, lowering her eyes. ""Thank you, Barbara. Grant and I make a great team. We know exactly what our long-term goals are.""

""I’m sure you do,"" I said evenly. ""In fact, Grant was telling me earlier about the new financing package. White Plains branch, wasn't it?""

Grant froze mid-chew. The fork in his hand paused over his plate. Lauren’s posture went rigid, her fingers tightening around her napkin.

""What about it?"" Grant asked, his voice dropping an octave, trying to sound casual.

""Nothing,"" I said, offering a faint, innocent smile. ""Just curious. Commercial loans usually require so many signatures and personal guarantees. It must have been exhausting handling all that paperwork in person.""

Lauren swallowed hard, glancing quickly at Grant. Grant’s eyes narrowed as he scrutinized my face, searching for any sign of suspicion. But I simply took a sip of water, looking completely naive and domestic.

""It was routine,"" Grant said curtly. ""Lauren handles the administrative filings. You wouldn't understand the legal structure, Jenna. Let's change the subject.""

""Of course,"" I replied. ""You're the expert.""

After dinner, while Barbara helped Grant clear the dining table to review site blueprints, Lauren stepped down the hallway toward the guest bathroom. I quietly followed her, stopping near the library alcove.

Lauren had set her leather portfolio on the antique console table while she washed her hands. Stepping forward silently, I unzipped the front compartment. Inside sat a slim navy-blue leather case.

I opened it. Resting inside was a New York State driver’s license.

It had my legal name: Jenna Whitaker Holloway. It had my exact birthdate and our Scarsdale residential address. But the photograph staring back at me from the plastic card was Lauren Hayes, wearing a dark blonde wig and subtle makeup to mimic my facial structure.

Tucked behind the fake ID was a custom notary logbook. The latest entry was dated three weeks ago: Personal Guarantee & Trust Hypothecation Agreement—Witnessed signature of Jenna Whitaker Holloway.

My hand remained steady as I pulled out my private estate phone, snapped high-resolution photos of the counterfeit license, the notary journal, and the front cover of Lauren's portfolio, and sent them directly to Howard Sinclair’s secure server.

I slipped everything back into place just as the bathroom door handle turned.
