Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

The courthouse in downtown Austin was packed to capacity three weeks later for Courtney Vance’s preliminary hearing. Every major news network was present, but this time, the narrative had completely reversed. The District Attorney had unsealed the forensic evidence, revealing Courtney’s systemic scheme of corporate fraud, identity theft, and stalking.

Courtney sat at the defense table wearing a plain beige prison jumpsuit, her blonde hair unwashed and pulled into a messy ponytail. Gone were the designer dresses, the smug smirks, and the arrogant confidence. When Grant and Natalie walked through the heavy wooden double doors together, walking hand in hand, Courtney’s eyes flared with pure malice.

Grant took the stand first. With absolute poise and unyielding clarity, he detailed every fabricated email, every forged signature, and every financial discrepancy that had been uncovered by his forensics team. He presented the certified letter bearing the green ink signature, which forensic handwriting experts had conclusively matched to Courtney’s personal notebooks.

Then, Natalie took the stand.

She did not look like a victim anymore. Dressed in an elegant navy blazer, her chin held high, she delivered her testimony with devastating grace. She recounted the night she was drugged, the humiliation of being cast out onto the street, and the five years she spent raising two twin boys with no support while Courtney lived in luxury off stolen funds.

When the prosecutor played the audio recording from the day care parking lot—where Courtney could be heard loudly threatening to take the boys away and bragging about framing Natalie five years ago—Courtney’s defense attorney slumped into his chair, realizing there was no possible defense left to offer.

The judge slammed her gavel down with an echoing crack that silenced the entire courtroom.

""The evidence presented against the defendant, Courtney Vance, demonstrates a calculated pattern of malice, corporate sabotage, and emotional cruelty that borders on sociopathic,"" the judge declared sternly. ""Bail is hereby revoked immediately. The defendant will remain in custody pending formal sentencing, where she faces a minimum recommended sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.""

Courtney began to scream, thrashing against the bailiffs as they pinned her arms behind her back and clicked the metal handcuffs around her wrists. ""Grant! You can't do this to me! You loved me! I did this for us!""

Grant didn't even look at her as the guards dragged her kicking through the side exit. He stood up, stepped down from the gallery, and took Natalie’s hand, leading her out through the main doors into the bright Texas sunshine.

Outside the courthouse steps, dozens of reporters shouted questions, but Grant stopped at the top of the stairs, wrapping an arm around Natalie's waist and speaking clearly into the bank of microphones.

""Five years ago, I allowed lies to blind me to the truth,"" Grant announced, his voice steady and proud. ""I lost the best thing that ever happened to me. But today, justice was served. My only focus now is spending the rest of my life earning back the trust of my wife and being the father my sons deserve.""
