Chapter 1 - The Green Ink Trap

The marble floor of the Grand Austin Hotel seemed to tilt beneath Grant Holloway’s polished shoes. In his hand, the certified envelope felt heavier than lead. The paper was weathered along the edges, dated nearly five years back, marked with a bold red stamp that declared it refused. But it was the signature that paralyzed him. The loops of the letters mimicked his exact handwriting, yet the unmistakable emerald green ink screamed the truth. Grant had strictly forbidden colored ink on executive documents for a decade, while Courtney had always proudly flaunted a custom fountain pen filled with forest green pigment.
Courtney lunged forward, her French-manicured fingers clawing at the paper. ""Give that to me, Grant! She’s staging this! Anyone can buy a green pen! She probably dug through my old desk drawers or paid someone to forge your name!""
Grant pulled the envelope out of her reach, his gaze narrowing as a chill ran down his spine. ""You signed this, didn’t you?"" he asked, his voice dead and low, cutting cleanly through the busy ambient noise of the lobby. ""Five years ago, you sat outside my office door. Every piece of certified mail had to go through your hands before it touched my desk.""
""Grant, baby, think about who loves you!"" Courtney cried, her voice pitching into a theatrical wail that turned the heads of several hotel guests checking in at the front counter. ""She walked out on you! She sold our trade secrets to Vantage Holdings! I was the one who picked up the pieces when your marriage fell apart!""
""I didn't walk out,"" Natalie stated calmly. Her posture was completely straight, her hands gently resting on the shoulders of the two boys standing in front of her. ""I was escorted out of the building by armed security guards because my husband refused to look me in the eye. You gave me two hours to pack five years of marriage into a cardboard box.""
The little boy with the patched teddy bear tugged hard on Natalie’s cardigan. ""Mommy, who is this lady? Why is she screaming at you?""
""Hush, Leo,"" Natalie whispered softly, kneeling down so she was at eye level with the child. She brushed a lock of messy brown hair from his forehead—a gesture Grant recognized with sudden, suffocating clarity because his own mother used to do the exact same thing to him. ""Everything is fine. Just stay close to your brother.""
Grant stepped around Courtney, his knees trembling slightly. Up close, the resemblance was not just a passing similarity; it was undeniable biology. The second boy had a tiny, half-moon scar just below his collarbone, in the exact spot where Grant had tumbled from a bicycle at age six. Grant swallowed past the hard lump in his throat.
""What was in this letter, Natalie?"" Grant asked, tearing open the brittle edge of the envelope with shaking fingers.
""A formal request for mediation,"" Natalie answered, standing back up and staring down Courtney with cold resolve. ""Along with my medical records from St. Jude’s Women’s Clinic confirming a high-risk pregnancy with twins. And an affidavit from the waiter who was bribed to slip roofies into my glass the night those fake hotel pictures were taken.""
Courtney’s face lost every remaining trace of color. She grabbed her designer leather purse and stepped backward toward the revolving glass doors. ""This is insane. I’m not standing here listening to fairy tales spun by a broke woman trying to extort child support. Grant, if you don't walk out with me right this second, we are done!""
For the first time in five years, the threat of losing Courtney held zero power over him. Grant didn't even turn his head to look at her. Instead, he pulled out a folded sheaf of yellowed medical charts stamped with ultrasound images dated July 14th.

""Security,"" Grant commanded, raising two fingers toward the head of hotel security standing by the concierge desk. Marcus, an imposing retired detective who had worked for Grant for years, rushed over immediately.
""Keep Courtney in the executive lounge,"" Grant ordered, his eyes never leaving the ultrasound scan showing two tiny heartbeats. ""Take her phone, disable her access badge to the penthouse, and call our corporate forensic team. I want every hard drive she touched over the last six years mirrored within the hour.""
