Chapter 7 - A Shadow from the Past

Just as life began to settle into a fragile, healing rhythm, Courtney’s desperate vengeance struck one final blow. While out on high-sum bail awaiting trial, she managed to contact an unscrupulous tabloid journalist, feeding him a twisted story claiming that Grant Holloway had used his immense wealth to kidnap two children from a struggling single mother.
On a Tuesday morning, as Natalie was walking the boys out of their newly enrolled private school, a swarm of paparazzi ambushed them at the front gates. Flashing cameras blinded the children, and aggressive reporters shoved microphones directly into five-year-old Leo’s terrified face.
""Natalie! Did Grant Holloway force you into signing an illegal custody deal?""
""Is it true he paid you five million dollars to keep quiet about his neglect?""
Leo began to hyperventilate, his asthma triggered by the sheer panic of the crowd. He dropped his patched teddy bear into a puddle of muddy water, clinging desperately to Natalie’s legs as he wheezed for air.
""Get back! Leave my children alone!"" Natalie screamed, trying to shield both boys with her body, but the photographers pressed closer, hungry for a viral video.
Tires screeched violently against the asphalt. A black SUV vaulted over the curb, blocking the paparazzi's path. Grant leaped out of the driver's seat, his face contorted in an absolute fury that terrified even the most hardened reporters. He shoved two cameramen backward with forceful, decisive shoves, instantly creating a protective perimeter around his family.
""Touch them again and I will buy the media companies you work for and fire you before sunset!"" Grant roared, his voice echoing across the school courtyard with thunderous authority.
He immediately scooped a struggling Leo into his arms, pulling an inhaler from his coat pocket—something he had taken to carrying with him everywhere over the past month. He pressed the mouthpiece to Leo's lips, coaching him through steady breaths while wrapping his other arm around Noah and pulling Natalie against his chest.
""I've got you,"" Grant whispered fiercely into Leo's hair. ""Daddy's here. Nobody is touching you. Nobody.""
Marcus and three private security guards arrived seconds later in a chase vehicle, pinning the paparazzi against the school fence and demanding police intervention. Grant carried Leo straight into the back of the SUV, pulling Natalie and Noah inside before slamming the door shut against the flashing lights.
Inside the quiet vehicle, Leo’s breathing gradually steadied as the medication took effect. Natalie sat trembling, her hands shaking uncontrollably from the adrenaline surge.

Grant reached down into the floorboard, pulled up Leo’s muddy teddy bear, and wiped it clean with his custom silk pocket square before handing it back to the little boy. Then, without saying a word, he took Natalie’s trembling hand in both of his own, holding it firmly against his chest.
For the first time in five years, Natalie didn't pull away. She leaned her forehead against Grant’s broad shoulder and let the hot tears fall, allowing herself to be protected.
