Chapter 4 - The Black Book

Judge Walsh closed the medical dossier and looked over at me. "Mrs. Dawson, are you physically capable of continuing, or do you require immediate medical evaluation?"

"I can continue, Your Honor," I whispered, wiping the cold tears from my cheeks. "For Owen and my baby, I will finish this."

"Very well." Judge Walsh turned her piercing gaze back to the defense table. "The court hereby declares the previously submitted marital dissolution agreement null and void due to duress, fraud, and active criminal concealment."

Nolan lifted his head, his skin practically green. "Judge, please. The business assets... Dawson Logistics employs sixty people. If you freeze the commercial accounts—"

"The commercial accounts are already frozen, Mr. Dawson," another voice boomed from the back of the courtroom.

Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance walked through the swinging center gates, carrying a thick red expandable folder. Two plainclothes investigators followed closely behind him.

"Good morning, Your Honor," ADA Vance announced, approaching the well of the court. "The State of Missouri requests leave to file immediate felony indictments against Nolan Dawson and Vanessa Cole."

Vanessa began sobbing hysterically, burying her face against the table.

"On what charges, Mr. Vance?" Judge Walsh inquired, her pen poised above the docket.

"First-degree child endangerment, tampering with a witness, distribution of a controlled substance to a minor, and aggravated commercial fraud," Vance stated without hesitation.

Nolan’s lawyer jumped up again. "Commercial fraud? This is a domestic relations hearing! The state cannot ambush my client with financial charges without an arraignment!"

"We have the ledger, Counselor," Vance said, dropping a heavy black leather notebook onto Nolan's desk with a dull thud.

Nolan stared at the book as if it were a venomous snake.

"Where... where did you get that?" Nolan gasped, his breath hitching violently.

"Your warehouse manager on River Road handed it over two hours ago," Vance said coolly. "Turns out, when a man is facing twenty years for child abuse, his loyal employees suddenly remember where the hidden tax shelters and offshore payrolls are buried."

Vance turned toward me, his expression softening into profound respect. "Mrs. Dawson, your husband hasn't just been hiding domestic funds. He has been laundering undocumented subcontractor fees through Miss Cole’s boutique marketing firm to avoid paying marital equity."

I looked at Nolan, realizing that the man I had married seven years ago had never truly existed. He was nothing more than a hollow shell built on greed, vanity, and calculated theft.
