Chapter 1 - The Child at the Witness Stand

Owen stood on his tiptoes near the witness stand, his small hands clutching the frayed ears of his plush gray rabbit.
The courtroom fell into an oppressive, suffocating silence. Even the court reporter's fingers hovered motionless above her stenograph machine.
"Owen, sweetie," Judge Walsh spoke, her usually stern courtroom voice softening into something grandmotherly. "You don't need to be afraid of anyone in this room."
Nolan’s lawyer jumped up from his leather chair. "Your Honor! The minor child is not on the witness list. Calling him without prior notice violates procedural rules!"
"Counselor, sit down before I hold you in summary contempt," Judge Walsh snapped, her dark eyes flashing like lightning. "This court was approached directly by child protective advocates twenty minutes ago."
Nolan gripped the edge of the mahogany defense table until his knuckles turned as white as paper.
"Owen," Nolan choked out, trying to force a warm, paternal smile that looked grotesque against his pallid face. "Buddy, remember what we talked about in the car? We don't tell family secrets to strangers."
"Mr. Dawson, one more word out of your mouth without my permission, and you will spend the rest of this hearing in the holding cell," Judge Walsh warned coldly.
Vanessa shrank back against her seat, pulling her designer blazer tightly across her chest. Her smug, condescending sneer had completely vanished.
I held my breath, resting one protective hand over my swollen belly. My unborn baby kicked gently, as if sensing the electric terror rolling off Nolan.
Owen looked up at the elevated judicial bench. His big hazel eyes were glossy with unshed tears, but beneath the fear, there was an unmistakable spark of stubborn honesty.
"The judge lady told me that inside this room, telling the truth means the monsters can't touch you anymore," Owen said, his small voice echoing off the high plaster ceiling.
Nolan closed his eyes, a bead of cold sweat rolling down his jawline.
"That is correct, Owen," Judge Walsh said, nodding encouragingly. "Can you tell me what happened last Tuesday night when your mommy was at the hospital getting an ultrasound?"
May you like
Owen nodded slowly. He pointed a trembling little finger directly at Vanessa.
"She told Daddy that if I didn't drink the bitter milk, she would lock Barnaby in the garage trash can."
