Chapter 2 - The Bitter Milk

The word milk hung in the courtroom like a ticking bomb.

Nolan’s attorney scrambled to grab his client’s arm, whispering frantically into his ear, but Nolan seemed paralyzed.

"What do you mean by bitter milk, Owen?" Judge Walsh asked, leaning forward over her bench.

"It tasted funny. Like crushed medicine," Owen whispered, burying his nose into the rabbit's matted fur. "Vanessa put little blue pills in my cup and stirred it with a silver spoon."

I gasped, my hand instinctively flying to my mouth as a wave of nausea washed over me.

Beside Nolan, Vanessa stood up abruptly. "He's making this up! He's six years old! Claire coached him to say this to destroy my reputation!"

"Bailiff, seat the lady immediately!" Judge Walsh slammed her wooden gavel down with a deafening crack. "One more outburst from the gallery and you will be removed in cuffs!"

Two armed deputies stepped behind Vanessa, their hands resting firmly on their duty belts. Vanessa sank back down, her painted face crumbling into a mask of pure panic.

"Owen," the judge continued gently. "Why did she want you to drink that milk?"

"Because Daddy said Mommy was going to come home and take me to the doctor," Owen explained, his lower lip quivering. "And Daddy said if the doctor saw the purple marks on my legs, the police would take Daddy away."

A collective murmur of horror ripped through the spectators in the back rows.

I felt the ground tilt beneath my feet. I remembered that night with agonizing clarity.

I had rushed home from my high-risk ultrasound appointment because Nolan claimed Owen had fallen down the stairs while playing superhero. Owen had been sleeping deeply—unusually deeply—for twelve straight hours.

Every time I tried to wake him, Nolan had pushed me away, insisting the boy just had a mild concussion and needed rest.

"Owen," I found my voice, though it cracked with tears. "My sweet boy... what purple marks?"

Owen looked down at his yellow cardigan, then slowly began unbuttoning it with clumsy fingers.

Before he could pull it back, Judge Walsh raised her hand. "Child Advocate Reynolds, please escort the minor to my private chambers. Forensic photographs have already been entered into sealed evidence."

A kind woman in a beige suit stepped through the side door and gently led Owen away. As he passed my table, he looked back over his shoulder.

"Mommy," he whispered. "I threw the rest of the milk into the air vent behind my toy box so Barnaby wouldn't die."
