Chapter 9 - The Trial and the Verdict

The federal courtroom was packed to capacity for the final sentencing hearing of United States v. Marcus Vance and David Hayes.

Audrey sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in an immaculate ivory pantsuit. Beside her, sitting with absolute relaxed dominance, was Roman Vale. The press cameras outside had spent weeks trying to capture a photograph of them together; today, they gave the media everything they wanted without uttering a single word.

David Hayes stood before the federal judge in an orange inmate jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to his waist chain. His hair was thinning, his posture broken, his eyes fixed firmly on the carpet.

"David Hayes," the presiding judge declared, adjusting her spectacles. "You have pled guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, one count of bank forgery, and one count of obstruction of justice. You abused your position of trust, actively attempted to frame an innocent civilian and reputable professional—your own wife—and participated in an extensive scheme to compromise municipal infrastructure."

The judge looked down over the bench with cold disdain.

"It is the judgment of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a term of eighty-four months, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of 2.1 million dollars."

David flinched as the gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp, definitive crack.

As the marshals turned him to lead him away toward the holding cells, David caught Audrey’s gaze across the crowded room.

Audrey didn't scowl. She didn't smirk. She simply looked at him with the cool, untroubled detachment of a stranger watching a passing train. David’s eyes flicked to Roman, whose arm was draped comfortably around the back of Audrey’s bench seat, his gray eyes shining with ruthless triumph.

David swallowed hard, lowered his head, and was led through the heavy steel doors into his seven-year prison sentence.

Outside the courthouse steps, a mob of journalists shouted questions, flashing bulbs illuminating the gray winter afternoon.

"Mrs. Hayes! Did you know about the embezzlement?"

"Mr. Vale, are you expanding your operations into municipal infrastructure?"

Roman didn't stop for the microphones. He kept one arm firmly around Audrey's waist, guiding her smoothly through the throngs of reporters as his private security detail cleared a path to the waiting black luxury sedan.

Before stepping into the car, Audrey turned back to look at the courthouse pillars one last time. The burden that had weighed on her chest for months—the shame, the humiliation, the lingering sting of betrayal—evaporated into the brisk winter air.

She was free. Truly, entirely free.

She climbed into the warm interior of the car, and Roman slid in beside her, closing the door and shutting out the noise of the entire world.
