Chapter 3 - The Broken Foundation

By four in the morning, Audrey had cracked the encryption on David's personal laptop backups, cross-referencing company payroll logs with shipping schedules. Roman stood nearby, listening in silence as she laid out the blueprint of David's betrayal.
"David didn't leave the country," Audrey declared, pointing a pen at a map of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. "Look at the fuel receipts tied to the emergency company card. He refueled forty miles south of Annapolis at 6:30 PM. He didn't head for an international airport. He went toward the Vance family marina."
Roman reached into his inner pocket and produced a sleek smartphone. He hit speed dial. "Dante. Send a surveillance team to the Vance estate on the Eastern Shore. Do not engage. Just put a cage around the perimeter. Nobody enters, nobody leaves."
He ended the call and looked back at Audrey, who was pale, exhausted, but completely upright. "You haven't slept in nearly twenty-four hours."
"I don't need sleep," Audrey replied stubbornly, though her eyelids burned like sand. "I need this nightmare finished."
"Exhaustion breeds mistakes," Roman countered, walking around the desk. He took her gently by the forearm. His touch was unexpectedly firm yet restrained, sending a sudden jolt of warmth through her weary frame. "There is a private suite through that door. Fresh clothes, a shower, a locked door. Sleep for three hours, Audrey. That is an order."
"I don't take orders from you, Mr. Vale."
"You do when we are partners in survival," he said, holding her gaze until she finally exhaled a long breath and stepped away.
In the en-suite bathroom, Audrey stripped off her damp clothes, turning the water as hot as she could bear. As the steam filled the room, the raw shock of finding David in their bed with Chloe Mercer finally washed over her in waves. Tears mixed with the rushing water—not tears of heartbreak, but of pure rage. She scrubbed her skin until it was pink, washing away six years of illusions, half-truths, and subtle gaslighting.
When she emerged wrapped in a heavy terrycloth robe, she found a set of tailored slate-gray clothes laid across the bed, perfectly matched to her measurements. On the nightstand sat a handwritten card in bold, elegant cursive:
*Rest. The real battle starts at dawn. — R.V.*
Audrey collapsed onto the mattress and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep. She awoke exactly three hours later to the sound of hushed, tense voices coming through the heavy wooden door of the office suite.
"...she is a liability, Boss," an unfamiliar man was saying. "If the feds grab her, she links you to the entire Vance development network."
"She is not a liability," Roman's unmistakable voice answered with absolute authority. "She is the only person who can dismantle Vance’s structural audit from the inside. And Dante?"
"Yes, Boss?"
"If you ever question my judgment regarding Audrey Hayes again, you will find yourself running security for our salvage barges in the Arctic. Do we understand each other?"
May you like
"Understood, Mr. Vale."
Audrey stood frozen behind the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. Roman wasn't just using her as a tool; he was putting his own syndicate on the line to keep her shielded.
