Chapter 2 - The Ghost Accounts

The penthouse office atop Vale Shipping did not look like the lair of a criminal warlord. It was a cathedral of brushed steel, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the black waters of the Chesapeake Bay, and rows of glowing computational monitors.

"Sit," Roman said, shedding his damp coat and tossing it over a leather recliner. He poured two fingers of amber rye into a crystal tumbler and slid it across the mahogany desk toward her. "Drink it. Shock makes people sloppy, and I need your brain sharp."

Audrey ignored the glass. "Give me the ledger files."

Roman paused, his brow lifting slightly in quiet approval. He turned a massive widescreen monitor toward her and tapped a command into the keyboard. "David used three front entities: Apex Logistics, Blue Harbor Holdings, and an engineering consultancy registered under your maiden name."

Audrey leaned over the desk, her analytical mind automatically taking control. Numbers, routing codes, offshore shell transfers. For the past two years, while she was pulling sixty-hour weeks running structural stress tests on municipal bridges, her husband had been systematically siphoning funds through duplicate procurement invoices.

"Look at this timestamp," Audrey muttered, pulling the keyboard toward her, her fingers flying across the keys with familiar precision. "He was transferring tranches of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars into an account routed through Panama. But he wasn't doing it alone. Look at the authorization certificates."

Roman leaned down beside her. His presence was overwhelming—the scent of rain, cedarwood, and cold leather closing around her senses. He rested one large hand on the back of her chair, his face inches from hers as he studied the glowing data. "Marcus Vance," Roman stated, his voice turning dangerously cold.

"Who is Marcus Vance?" Audrey asked, glancing up.

"The city council chairman overseeing the port expansion," Roman replied, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure steel. "David wasn’t just embezzling my private capital. He was acting as a bagman for city officials trying to frame my shipping enterprise for municipal kickbacks. That is why he had you sign those structural releases. If an indictment landed, your name as chief engineer would authenticate the fraudulent load ratings, invalidating my port leases and handing the city complete administrative control."

The full extent of David's cruelty struck Audrey like a physical blow. He hadn't just fallen out of love; he had methodically prepared her as a human shield to absorb twenty years in federal prison while he sipped cocktails in non-extradition territory.

"He was going to destroy me," she said, her voice shaking with an icy, simmering fury she didn't know she possessed.

"He was going to destroy us both," Roman corrected softly. "Except he made a fatal calculation error. He assumed you were a fragile, compliant suburban wife who would sign whatever papers he left on the breakfast counter without reading the appendices."

May you like

"I never signed those appendices," Audrey said, meeting Roman's piercing stare directly. "And I don't break under stress, Mr. Vale."

"Good," Roman whispered, his gaze lingering on her face, tracing the fierce determination burning behind her eyes. "Because tomorrow morning, we begin our counter-offensive. And you are going to show me where the foundations are cracked."
