Chapter 1 - The Midnight Contract

"What do you want?" Audrey’s voice sliced through the damp chill of the doorway, sharper than the razor-wire rain beating against her porch.

Roman Vale looked down at her with eyes that looked carved from riverbed stone. "What I want, Mrs. Hayes, is my capital returned before sunrise. But since David seems to have vanished into thin air with a twenty-four-year-old amateur and a bag full of my cashier checks, I find myself holding the only remaining piece of leverage." He tapped the folded sheet of paper in his leather-gloved fingers. "Your signature on my mortgage lien."

"It is a forgery," she hissed, her knuckles whitening on the brass latch. "You said so yourself. A court will throw that paper out inside ten minutes."

"Perhaps," Roman answered smoothly, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that seemed to vibrate straight into the hardwood floor beneath her bare feet. "In eighteen months. After three separate forensic handwriting depositions, two public asset freezes, and an involuntary bankruptcy filing against your engineering firm. By that time, your professional reputation will be dust, your credit will be erased, and the bank will have auctioned this lovely crown-molding roof over your head to the highest bidder." He stepped half an inch closer, the tailored lines of his dark cashmere coat filling the doorway frame. "Or, we can come to an alternative arrangement."

Audrey let out a brittle laugh. "An arrangement? I am an engineer, Mr. Vale. I don’t deal in underworld favors. I design bridge supports and load-bearing concrete."

"I know exactly who you are," Roman murmured. "Audrey Hayes, lead structural consultant for the harbor redevelopment corridor. Top five percent of your class at Johns Hopkins. You don’t make mathematical errors, and you don’t panic under dead weight." His gray eyes flicked down to her trembling hand, noting the raw pink indentation where her wedding band had been ripped off and discarded just three hours prior. "Your husband made you the guarantor on a high-risk offshore escrow designed to launder harbor permits. He set you up to take the criminal indictment the moment federal auditors opened the books on Friday. He didn't just run off with his mistress, Audrey. He left you strapped to a ticking bomb."

A cold, sickening dread settled in the pit of her stomach. The packed bag. David's nervous trembling in the kitchen. He hadn't just panicked because he got caught cheating—he was escaping the blast radius.

"Why are you telling me this?" she whispered.

"Because David thought he was playing me," Roman said, a faint, lethal smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Nobody plays me and lives comfortably on a tropical island. I can track him down in forty-eight hours, but to dismantle the shell company he used to bleed my shipping accounts, I need someone who knows the internal construction logistics. Someone who can read the blueprinted shell files he encrypted." He gestured toward the idling black SUV at the curb. "You want your life back? You want your name cleared and your pride returned with interest? You come with me. Help me balance David’s ledger, and by the time we are done, you keep the house, you keep your business, and your husband will answer for every stolen cent."

Audrey stood poised between the ruins of her broken marriage and the shadowy precipice of Baltimore's most dangerous empire. Behind her lay shattered picture frames, cold memories, and betrayal. Before her stood a predator offering retribution.

She took a single breath, unhooked the security chain, and stepped out onto the porch.
