Chapter 9 - Eviction

While Julian sat in his holding cell signing the documents of his own ruin, a very different drama was unfolding at the Vance family estate in Westchester.

A fleet of commercial moving vans sat idling in the circular gravel driveway. Six uniformed private security guards stood along the grand stone portico, overseeing a team of professional movers who were carefully packing up decorative antiques.

Evelyn Vance stood on the front lawn in her silk dressing gown, clutching an armful of fur coats, screaming at the top of her lungs at the estate manager.

""You can't do this! This is my son's house! I have lived in this mansion for seven years! Get your filthy hands off my porcelain!""

Beatrice sat on a stone bench beside two oversized designer suitcases, weeping hysterically while scrolling through her phone. ""Mother, stop shouting! It's over! My card was declined at the cafe, my car lease has been canceled, and all our friends have blocked my number on Instagram! We're ruined! Everyone is calling us social pariahs!""

A sleek black town car pulled into the driveway, and I stepped out onto the gravel. The autumn breeze swept across the lawn, carrying the scent of pine and fresh earth.

Evelyn rushed toward me, her face pale, the arrogance of the previous evening completely evaporated. She dropped to her knees on the damp grass, reaching out to grasp the hem of my trousers.

""Clara! Please, child! We took you into our home! We gave you our family name! You can't throw an old woman into the street! Where are we supposed to go?""

I looked down at her with calm detachment. ""You didn't take me into your home, Evelyn. I purchased this property ten months before Julian proposed, through an anonymous trust. For eight years, I allowed you to live here rent-free while you treated me like an unpaid maid. You told me I was born in the gutter. You laughed when your son paraded his mistresses in front of me.""

""I was wrong! I was foolish!"" she wailed, tears streaming through her heavy foundation. ""Please, just let us keep the guest house! Just give us an allowance!""

""Your son signed the complete surrender this morning,"" I told her, stepping cleanly away from her grasping hands. ""A taxi has been called to take you both to a modest apartment complex in Queens. The first three months of rent are paid out of my personal charity fund. After that, Beatrice can find a job, and you can live on your state pension.""

""A job?!"" Beatrice shrieked in horror. ""I don't know how to do anything!""

May you like

""Then you had better learn quickly,"" I said, turning my back on them and walking toward the front doors of my home. ""The moving vans leave in twenty minutes. If you are still on the property after that, you will be arrested for criminal trespassing.""

As the heavy oak doors shut behind me, the screams of the Vance family faded into the distance, permanently erased from my life.
