Chapter 8 - The Cold Cell

The next morning, the gray light of dawn filtered through the reinforced glass of the holding facility at the Manhattan Detention Complex. Julian sat on a hard stainless-steel bench, shivering in his ruined tuxedo shirt. His bowtie was gone, his hair was matted with sweat, and the manicured polish of his life had dissolved into the grim reality of a concrete holding cell.

The heavy steel door buzzed open, and a corrections officer tapped the bars. ""Vance. You have a visitor in consultation room three. Your attorney.""

Julian scrambled to his feet, relief washing over his hollow face. ""Thank God! My mother must have liquidated the bond portfolio!""

He hurried into the sterile consultation room, but the person sitting across the plexiglass partition was not his corporate lawyer. It was me.

I sat dressed in a pristine ivory cashmere suit, my posture composed, looking rested and luminous. Samuel Bennett sat beside me, laying out three thick sets of legal documents.

Julian dropped into the chair across from me, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling violently against the counter. ""Clara! Clara, you have to drop the charges! Please, you don't know what it's like in here! They treated me like a common criminal! Victoria lied to me—she was the one who altered the books! She seduced me, Clara! She manipulated me because she wanted your money!""

I listened to him throw his beloved mistress under the bus without batting an eye. The cowardice was breathtaking, but utterly predictable.

""Victoria is currently in the federal wing,"" Samuel remarked smoothly, ""and she has already signed a proffer agreement with the prosecutors. She provided three years of encrypted WhatsApp messages showing you directed every single fraudulent wire transfer yourself.""

Julian's mouth opened and closed soundlessly, his jaw trembling.

""I didn't come here to argue with you, Julian,"" I said, sliding the legal paperwork toward the slot beneath the partition. ""I came to present you with reality. These are the uncontested divorce papers. You will surrender every claim to marital property, waive all rights to alimony, and forfeit all remaining shares in Vance Enterprises. In exchange, my legal team will not petition the court to pursue civil restitution damages against your personal trust funds.""

""You want me to sign away everything?"" he rasped, tears finally spilling over his sunken cheeks. ""I'll be penniless! I will have nothing left!""

May you like

""You had nothing when I met you,"" I replied evenly. ""You just had a louder voice and better tailoring. Sign the papers, Julian. Or the federal judge will ensure your prison sentence is measured in decades instead of years.""

With shaking, tear-stained hands, the man who had called me a worthless housewife picked up the pen and signed his empire away.
