Chapter 3 - The Unveiling

The heavy double doors swung open, flanked by four towering private security officers wearing the discreet silver crest of the Sterling family. The ballroom crowd parted like the Red Sea, murmuring in breathless admiration as a solitary figure stepped into the light.

She wore a midnight-blue gown that shimmered like a starless sky, the fabric moving with the liquid grace of royal silk. A multi-million-dollar collar of flawless obsidian diamonds caught the chandeliers' light, framing high cheekbones, flawlessly painted lips, and eyes that held the chilling power of a winter gale.

Julian squinted across the vast expanse, his brow furrowing in confusion. ""Who is that?"" he muttered to Victoria. ""I’ve never seen her on Forbes or Bloomberg. But look at that security detail... she must be the Sterling family heiress.""

Victoria swallowed nervously, suddenly feeling cheap in her rented emerald dress. ""She... she carries herself like old royalty.""

The woman walked down the central red carpet with slow, measured deliberate steps. Her high heels clicked against the polished parquet floor with the rhythm of an impending execution. As she drew nearer to Table One, Julian took a confident step forward, extending a practiced hand, flashing his most dazzling commercial smile.

""Good evening, ma'am,"" Julian said smoothly, projecting his voice for the surrounding executives to hear. ""I am Julian Vance, CEO of Vance Enterprises. It is an absolute privilege to welcome you to our—""

The words froze in his throat.

His hand remained suspended in mid-air. The color drained from his face so fast it looked as though his heart had stopped beating entirely. His knees buckled slightly, his knuckles turning chalky white against the edge of the table.

The woman stopped right in front of him. She looked down at him not with anger, but with the quiet, devastating amusement one might give a cockroach crawling across an expensive marble foyer.

""Good evening, Julian,"" I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent tables. ""You seem surprised to see me. Didn't you tell me just two hours ago that I wasn't the kind of wife a successful man shows off?""

A collective gasp rippled through the immediate tables. Evelyn dropped her glass, shattering crystal across the floor and sending vintage champagne splashing across Beatrice's designer shoes.

""C-Clara...?"" Julian stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. ""What... what is this joke? Where did you steal that dress? What are you doing here?!""

I didn't dignify his stuttering with a reply. I turned gracefully and walked up the steps of the main stage, taking my position behind the podium bearing the official seal of the Sterling Investment Group.
