Chapter 4 - The Board's Audit

I adjusted the microphone with steady fingers, looking out over three hundred of Manhattan's most prominent investors, bank presidents, and city officials. At the center of them all stood Julian, his face pale green, frantically whispering to a trembling Victoria while his mother clutched her chest in genuine panic.
""Distinguished guests, partners, and friends,"" I began, my tone ringing with crystalline clarity. ""For nearly a decade, many of you have known me simply as Clara Sterling, the silent managing partner of Sterling Investment Group. For personal reasons, I chose to maintain absolute privacy regarding my identity and family assets.""
Murmurs of shock and awe spread across the room. Several senior hedge fund managers at the front tables nodded respectfully, recognizing the historic Sterling lineage that had remained reclusive for decades.
""Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of Vance Enterprises' commercial renewal,"" I continued, turning my cold gaze toward Table One. ""Mr. Julian Vance believed that my fund was preparing to inject seventy-five million dollars of private capital into his logistics and shipping divisions.""
Julian stepped toward the stage, his eyes wide and desperate, gesturing wildly with his hands. ""Clara! Stop this right now! Whatever game you are playing, we are husband and wife! This is a private domestic dispute! You have no right to air marital squabbles in front of our distinguished colleagues!""
""Sit down, Julian,"" I commanded, my voice dropping into an icy register that caused the entire room to shudder. Two armed guards stepped directly into Julian's path, pinning him into his chair with terrifying efficiency.
""As the sole fiduciary trustee of Sterling Investment,"" I announced to the audience, ""I commissioned a forensic audit into Vance Enterprises' balance sheets over the past nine months. We discovered altered shipping manifests, ghost consulting fees, and systemic tax evasion exceeding twelve million dollars.""
I tapped the presentation remote in my hand. Behind me, the colossal twenty-foot digital screen flickered to life. Instead of a congratulatory corporate graphic, it displayed high-resolution scans of offshore accounts, fraudulent bank routing numbers, and transfer slips bearing Julian's signature alongside Victoria Pierce's maiden name.

Victoria let out a shrill scream, covering her face as camera flashes suddenly erupted from the press photographers gathered along the perimeter.
""Julian,"" I said smoothly, leaning over the podium, ""you told me earlier tonight that everything I had was because of you. Would you care to step up to the podium and explain to the Securities and Exchange Commission representatives in this room how my family's money ended up in your mistress's Cayman shell company?""
