Chapter 2 - The Seat Of Honor

The Grand Ballroom at The Pierre smelled of expensive champagne, rare orchids, and unchecked vanity. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, flattering glow over Manhattan's most ruthless venture capitalists, real estate tycoons, and socialites. At Table One, positioned directly beneath the spotlight of the elevated mahogany stage, Julian Vance leaned back in his leather chair like an emperor surveying his conquered kingdom.

Beside him, Victoria preened in a shimmering emerald gown that plunged dramatically at the neckline. Julian’s mother, Evelyn, clinked her champagne flute against her daughter Beatrice's glass, laughing loudly enough for the surrounding tables to take notice.

""Look at that table arrangement, Julian darling,"" Evelyn purred, waving a manicured, jewel-encrusted hand toward the stage. ""Table One. Center aisle. Right next to the podium! That reclusive owner of the Sterling Investment Group must hold you in extraordinary esteem to give you the place of honor.""

""I told you, Mother,"" Julian said with a dismissive smirk, adjusting the platinum cufflinks Victoria had bought him with his company’s embezzled credit line. ""Power respects power. Clara thought our business survived on her frugal coupon-clipping and domestic sacrifices. She could never understand that deals of this magnitude require raw charisma and sophisticated company."" He turned and pressed a lingering kiss against Victoria’s bare shoulder. ""A real man needs a real woman beside him. Someone who commands the room, not a mouse who hides behind kitchen counters.""

Victoria laughed softly, resting her hand possessively over his knee. ""I still can’t believe you let her live in that massive house for so long, Julian. Once the conservatorship papers are stamped by the judge tonight, we can finally remodel that awful estate. I’m thinking we turn her vegetable garden into an Olympic-sized infinity pool.""

""Whatever you want, sweetheart,"" Julian said generously. ""By midnight, Clara will be receiving round-the-clock medical supervision upstate, completely taken care of, of course. I'm a charitable man, after all.""

Beatrice snorted into her wine. ""Honestly, it’s an act of mercy. The woman looked like an unmade bed even when she tried to dress up. Can you imagine if Julian had actually brought her tonight? The press would have assumed we were declaring bankruptcy.""

A tuxedoed maître d’ approached the table, bowing with impeccable deference. ""Mr. Vance, a message from the executive suite of Sterling Investment Group. The principal owner has arrived and will take the stage shortly to announce the decisive corporate partnership for the next decade.""

Julian stood up straight, smoothing his lapels, his chest swelling with intoxicating pride. ""Thank you. Hear that, everyone? This is the moment Vance Enterprises joins the billionaire tier. Keep your glasses filled. We are drinking two-thousand-dollar champagne tonight.""

He looked toward the grand double doors of the ballroom, his eyes hungry for the mysterious tycoon whose signature would erase his seventy-million-dollar deficit and make him untouchable. The brass fanfare sounded, signaling the arrival of the night's keynote speaker, and the massive room fell dead silent.
