Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

With Vincent’s faction completely crushed, the boardroom cleared out, leaving only the family elders who had watched Luca grow up.
The eldest trustee, Uncle Antonio, approached Luca with tears of relief shining in his weathered eyes.
"Your grandfather would be proud of you today, Luca," Antonio said, resting a heavy hand on his nephew’s shoulder. "Not just for protecting the business, but for choosing a woman with the fire and wisdom to stand beside you."
He turned to Naomi, bowing his head with deep, old-world respect. "Welcome to the family, Signora Bellini. You are the anchor this man has needed for twenty years."
Naomi smiled warmly, feeling an overwhelming sense of belonging she hadn't felt since her grandmother's bakery was in its golden days.
When the elders left, Luca led Naomi to the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Delaware River below.
The afternoon sun was breaking through the autumn clouds, turning the water into shimmering ribbons of silver and blue.
Luca reached inside his suit pocket and pulled out the original one-year marriage contract they had signed in the dim Italian restaurant eleven months earlier.
The paper was creased and worn, bearing both of their signatures and the cold stipulations they had drafted in desperate times.
"Our one-year anniversary is in three weeks, Naomi," Luca said softly, his voice trembling with an emotion he could no longer hide.
Naomi felt her breath catch in her throat, her heart tightening. "I know."
Luca looked down at the document, and without another word, he tore the contract in half.
Then he tore it again, and again, until the pieces fluttered like white confetti onto the polished boardroom table.
"No more contracts," Luca whispered, dropping to one knee before her on the plush carpet.
From his pocket, he produced a velvet box containing a magnificent vintage ring featuring a radiant cushion-cut diamond flanked by two sapphire stones.
"I don't want a business partner, Naomi," Luca said, looking up at her with his soul laid bare in his eyes. "I want the woman who saved me from my own darkness. I want the mother of my child. I want to spend every sunrise and sunset loving you until my last breath."
He took her trembling hand into his, slipping the ring onto her finger where it fit with absolute perfection.
"Will you marry me, Naomi? Truly marry me, for the rest of our lives?"
Tears streamed freely down Naomi's cheeks as she dropped to her knees with him, throwing her arms around his neck and burying her face in his shoulder.
May you like
"Yes," she whispered fiercely against his lips. "A thousand times yes, Luca. Forever."
He kissed her with a passion that washed away every tear, every betrayal, and every fear they had ever carried.
