Chapter 6 - Judgment in the Rain

Luca stared at the ultrasound image for three agonizing seconds, his chest heaving under his soaked coat.

A profound, shattering emotion washed over his dark eyes—shock, awe, and a fierce, primal realization that took her breath away.

He gently picked up the wet photograph with steady, reverent fingers, wiping the drops of coffee from the glossy paper with his thumb.

"Our baby?" Luca asked, his voice cracking slightly as he looked back into Naomi's eyes.

Naomi nodded through her tears, terrified of his reaction. "Yes. I'm sorry, Luca... I know what you said about children..."

"Don't you ever apologize for this," Luca cut her off fiercely, pulling her head against his chest and kissing her hair with desperate tenderness. "Never apologize for giving me life."

On the floor beside them, Colin groaned, clutching his broken wrist as he struggled to sit up against a booth.

"You broken-nosed bastard!" Colin shrieked in pain, spit flying from his lips. "Do you have any idea who I am? I'll sue you for everything you own! I'll put you in prison for assault!"

Luca slowly rose to his feet, tucking the ultrasound carefully into the inner pocket of his coat, right next to his heart.

When he turned back toward Colin, the tenderness vanished, replaced by the merciless king of Philadelphia’s underworld.

"You don't know who I am, do you?" Luca asked, stepping toward him with slow, deliberate steps.

Marco stepped forward from the door, tossing a heavy leather folder onto the table with a dull thud.

"Colin Mercer," Marco said in a gravelly tone. "Wanted in three states for wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny. Operating under six aliases."

Colin's face turned completely white as he stared up at the two towering men. The realization hit him like a physical blow.

"Bellini..." Colin stammered, his teeth chattering in sudden, paralyzing horror. "You're... you're Luca Bellini."

"You touched my wife," Luca whispered, leaning down until his eyes were inches from Colin's sweating face. "You put your hands around the throat of the woman carrying my heir."

Colin began sobbing uncontrollably, pressing himself against the floorboards. "Please... I didn't know! She never said anything! I just wanted the money, Mr. Bellini, I swear!"

"You're going to sign the fraud confession Marco prepared," Luca said coldly, placing a heavy fountain pen between Colin's trembling fingers. "And then you're going to prison for the next twenty years."

"I'll sign! I'll sign right now!" Colin cried, scribbling his name frantically with his uninjured left hand.

Luca picked up the signed paper without looking at it, handing it to Marco.

"Take him out through the service alley," Luca ordered without emotion. "Ensure the federal prosecutors have him in custody within the hour. If he ever speaks her name again, finish it."

Marco grabbed Colin by his collar, dragging the weeping fraudster out of the room like a bag of garbage.

The café fell silent once more, leaving only the sound of the rain drumming against the glass.
