Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Silence

The morning after their night together was filled with a tender, glowing quiet that Naomi had never experienced before.

Luca brought her coffee in bed, lingering beside her with soft kisses against her bare shoulders, his guard completely dropped for the first time.

Yet, within forty-eight hours, an invisible wall seemed to rebuild itself inside the brownstone.

A high-stakes cargo dispute along the Delaware docks erupted into violence, demanding Luca’s constant, brutal attention for three consecutive weeks. Vincent Bellini was pulling strings behind the scenes, desperate to prove Luca couldn't maintain peace.

Luca returned home bruised, exhausted, and emotionally drained, with dark circles bruising his eyes.

Whenever he looked at Naomi now, his gaze was clouded with a deep, agonizing remorse. He would kiss her forehead gently, but he slept in his study, retreating into his shell like a wounded animal.

"I broke our deal, Naomi," he said one night, sitting alone in the dark with a glass of untouched bourbon. "I dragged you into my filth, and I swore I wouldn't."

"You didn't drag me anywhere, Luca," she argued, kneeling beside his leather chair. "I wanted you."

"You don't understand the danger," he replied harshly, staring at the floor. "My world destroys pure things. I will not ruin you."

Naomi felt a chill settle over her heart, fearing that his retreat was the beginning of the inevitable end of their one-year agreement.

Then, in early September, the nausea began.

At first, Naomi blamed the morning bakery heat and the grueling hours she spent over the ovens.

However, when the smell of her beloved vanilla extract made her violently ill three mornings in a row, she bought a pregnancy test with trembling hands.

The two bright pink lines appeared almost instantly in the bakery's tiny back bathroom.

She was pregnant with Luca Bellini’s child.

Terror and breathtaking joy collided violently inside her chest. She remembered his solemn condition on the night they signed the deal: This arrangement will never create a child. I won't bring one into my life.

She booked an appointment at a private clinic under an assumed name, desperate to confirm the reality before making an irreversible choice.

Holding the small black-and-white ultrasound picture showing a tiny, pulsing heartbeat, Naomi sat in her car and wept.

She loved this baby with a ferocity that eclipsed all fear. But before she could find the courage to tell her powerful husband, the ghosts of her past came knocking with a sledgehammer.
