Chapter 2 - The Line We Crossed

As the months turned from bitter winter into early spring, the cold, hollow house near Rittenhouse Square began to feel like a real home.

Second Rise Bakery was flourishing, fully renovated and freed from its crushing debts, thanks to the quiet army of attorneys Luca had unleashed on the predatory lenders.

Every Sunday, Luca rode in the black sedan with Naomi to visit Evelyn at the assisted-living facility. The proud old woman, who usually mistrusted businessmen, would playfully pinch Luca’s cheeks and demand he eat more butter.

"He looks like he works too hard," Evelyn would insist, pointing an arthritic finger at him. "Take care of my girl, young man."

"With my life, Evelyn," Luca always replied with complete, unwavering sincerity.

The turning point came on a stormy evening in May during the Bellini Atlantic annual charity gala.

Vincent Bellini, Luca’s scheming cousin who still hungered for the chairman seat, cornered Naomi near the grand ballroom terrace. His eyes were heavy with champagne and malice.

"You think you're clever, little baker?" Vincent sneered, blocking her path with a cocktail glass in his hand. "Luca doesn't love you. He's using you to keep the company, and the moment the year ends, you'll be thrown out with yesterday's trash."

Before Naomi could answer, a hand like an iron vise clamped onto Vincent's shoulder, spinning the grown man around like a ragdoll.

Luca stood there, radiating pure, lethal danger. Several security guards froze in their tracks, too terrified to interfere.

"If you ever speak to my wife again," Luca whispered in a deadly cadence, his face inches from his cousin's trembling nose, "I will strip everything your branch of this family owns and bury you in Delaware."

Vincent scrambled away in terror without uttering another syllable.

When they returned to the brownstone that night, the adrenaline and suppressed desire between them exploded into an uncontrollable fire. Luca backed her against the heavy mahogany door of his study, his breath hot against her parted lips.

"Tell me to stop, Naomi," he groaned, his hands gripping her waist so tightly she could feel the heat radiating from his palms. "Tell me right now."

Naomi didn't tell him to stop; instead, she tangled her fingers into his dark, silver-threaded hair and pulled him down to her mouth.

The kiss was desperate, fierce, and starving, breaking every boundary and erasing every cold contractual clause they had signed.

He carried her up the winding stairs to his bedroom, worshiping every inch of her skin as thunder rattled the city windows. For the first time, there were no walls, no business arrangements, and no fear between them.

Only a blinding passion that consumed them until the morning light filtered through the curtains.
