Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Family Table

The meeting took place in the neutral, sterile environment of Arthur’s law firm conference room on the thirty-fifth floor of the city center tower.

Justin and Paige arrived looking like ghosts of their former selves. Paige was wearing a simple, unbranded sweater, no makeup, her eyes puffy and red. Justin sat slumped in his leather swivel chair, unable to look me in the eye. Across from them sat my mother, Evelyn, whom Justin had begged to accompany them as a moral shield.

""Nora,"" Evelyn began, her voice quivering with theatrical sorrow, ""this has gone far enough. Look at your brother. Look at what you’ve reduced him to. You’ve humiliated them in front of the whole town. Where is your Christian charity? Where is your love for your own blood?""

""My charity ended when Justin targeted my child, Mom,"" I answered smoothly.

Arthur placed a heavy, bound document in front of Justin. ""Mr. Vance, this is the complete forensic audit of Vance Media LLC. Over the last twenty-four months, you have misappropriated four hundred and eighty-six thousand dollars of corporate capital for non-business, personal expenditures. You generated seventeen fraudulent invoices to cover up the deficit.""

Evelyn gasped, turning to Justin. ""Justin... is that true?""

Justin stared at the table, refusing to answer.

""It is entirely verified by banking records, IP logs, and merchant receipts,"" Arthur continued. ""Mrs. Nora Vance has the full legal right to present this packet to the county prosecutor this afternoon. A grand jury would return an indictment within forty-eight hours.""

Paige burst into loud, uncontrollable sobs, burying her face in her hands. ""Please, Nora! Please don't send him to prison! We’ll leave! We’ll do whatever you want! We have nothing left! Our accounts are overdrawn, my parents refuse to lend us money, and everyone is laughing at us online!""

""Here are my terms,"" I said, leaning forward, resting my forearms on the glass table. ""You sign the surrender agreement for the North Ridge house immediately. You will vacate the premises by Sunday at midnight, taking only your personal clothing and basic belongings. Any furniture purchased with corporate funds stays.""

""Sunday?!"" Paige wailed. ""Where are we supposed to go?!""

""You can rent a studio apartment across the river, or Justin can move back into Mom’s guest bedroom,"" I replied coldly. ""Second, you will both sign a full, binding non-disparagement agreement. Paige, you will delete that slanderous video from all social media platforms within the next fifteen minutes, along with a public retraction stating that your claims of financial abuse were entirely false.""

""And the money?"" Justin croaked, his voice cracking. ""The half a million dollars?""

""You will sign a formal confession of judgment,"" I said. ""I will not pursue criminal charges, and I will not garnish your future wages as long as you maintain complete, absolute distance from my family. You will never contact Leo again. You will not attend family holidays where he is present. You will not step foot near his school, his sports events, or our home. If you violate that restraining covenant even once, Arthur will immediately file the criminal complaint, and you will serve time.""

Justin’s hands trembled so violently he could barely hold the pen Arthur handed him. He looked up at our mother, hoping for a miracle, hoping she could twist reality one last time.

Evelyn looked at the thick stack of audit evidence, then looked at Justin’s pathetic, defeated posture. For the first time in her life, she couldn't find a single lie to protect her golden boy. She looked down at her lap and remained completely silent.

With tears dripping onto the paper, Justin Vance signed his name on the dotted line. Paige followed, her signature an illegible, shaking scrawl.

""It’s done,"" Arthur said, collecting the signed originals. ""You have until Sunday night. Good day.""
