Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gate

Desperation makes arrogant people reckless.

Two days later, on Thursday afternoon, I drove to the high school to pick up Leo from his robotics club meeting. The parking lot was mostly empty as dusk began to fall, casting long shadows across the concrete. Leo walked out of the double glass doors, carrying his heavy backpack and a cardboard box containing a miniature motorized rover he had spent three weeks programming.

As he approached my car, a battered silver sedan that had seen better days pulled aggressively into the pick-up lane, tires screeching, blocking my SUV from the front.

The door flew open, and Justin stepped out.

He looked unhinged. His expensive linen shirt was wrinkled and stained, his eyes were bloodshot from sleepless nights, and his jaw was covered in uneven stubble. He ignored me entirely and marched straight toward Leo.

""Leo!"" Justin yelled, his voice echoing across the courtyard. ""Tell your mother to stop this! Tell her to drop the lawsuit and give us our money back! You’re the one who started this mess by crying about some harmless comments at dinner!""

Leo froze in his tracks, hugging the cardboard box tightly against his chest, his eyes widening in alarm.

Before Justin could take another step, I slammed my car door open, stepped into the space between my brother and my son, and blocked him entirely.

""Take one more step toward my child, Justin, and I will have you arrested before your foot hits the pavement,"" I said, my voice dangerously quiet, vibrating with pure maternal fury.

Justin stopped, breathing heavily, smelling faintly of stale beer and cheap cologne. ""He’s brainwashing you, Nora! You’re throwing away your real family for a boy who doesn't even share your DNA! You know how much I sacrificed for this family? You’re sitting on millions, and Paige and I are eating canned soup because our cards don't work! My car was towed this morning! Do you have any idea how humiliating it was to watch a repo truck drag my vehicle out of the driveway while the neighbors watched?!""

""You didn't sacrifice anything, Justin,"" I countered, refusing to back down an inch. ""I bought that car. I paid for that house. I funded your fake lifestyle because I loved you, and in return, you treated my son like an unwelcome stray dog at your table. You brought this entire nightmare on yourself.""

""He’s not a Vance!"" Justin shouted, pointing a shaking finger past my shoulder at Leo. ""He’s just an orphan you took in to make yourself look like Mother Teresa on your company charity brochures! He’ll leave you the second he turns eighteen, and you’ll have nobody!""

A loud, authoritative voice cut through the air.

""Step away from the vehicle, sir! Keep your hands where we can see them!""

Justin jumped. Two campus security cruisers, accompanied by a local municipal police car, had pulled into the lane behind us. The high school’s athletic director, who had been locking up the gym doors, had immediately called the police when he saw Justin screech into the lot and confront a student.

The officer stepped out, his hand resting calmly near his holster. ""Ma'am, are you alright? Is this man harassing you?""

""This man is my estranged brother,"" I said clearly. ""He has been trespassing on school grounds, screaming at my minor son, and attempting to intimidate us over a civil financial dispute.""

Justin’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. ""Officer, this is a family misunderstanding! She’s my sister! I was just trying to talk to my nephew!""

""He isn't your nephew, remember?"" Leo's voice suddenly rang out from behind me. It wasn't loud, and it wasn't angry. It was calm, articulate, and devastatingly cold. ""You made sure I understood that very clearly on Friday night, Uncle Justin. So please leave my mother and me alone.""

The officer looked at Justin with pure contempt. ""Sir, step back to your vehicle right now. You are trespassing on school property. If you do not leave within sixty seconds, you will spend the night in county lockup.""

Justin looked at me, then at Leo, then at the officer. The realization that his charm and tantrums had zero power in the real world finally hit him like a physical blow. He scrambled back into his rusted loaner car, slammed the door, and sped away into the gathering dark.

I turned around and wrapped my arms around Leo. He hugged me back fiercely, resting his chin on my shoulder. ""I'm okay, Mom,"" he whispered. ""I'm really okay.""

""I know you are, baby,"" I replied. ""Now let's go end this once and for all.""
