Chapter 4 - The Smear Campaign

When people who are accustomed to privilege without effort suddenly lose their unearned advantages, they never blame their own entitlement. They blame the person who stopped giving it to them.

By Tuesday afternoon, the Vance family drama had spilled all over social media.

I was sitting in the bleachers of the high school gymnasium, watching Leo run drills with the junior varsity basketball team. He had made two consecutive three-pointers, his face glowing with sweat and genuine joy, high-fiving his teammates as they rotated positions. Seeing him smile like that—carefree, confident, and completely safe—reminded me that every penny I had stripped from my brother was worth it.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an incoming text from my cousin, Sarah.

Sarah: Nora... have you seen Paige’s Instagram story and Facebook feed? She’s dragging your name through the mud to every single relative, mutual friend, and church member.

I tapped the link Sarah sent. Paige had posted a two-minute video. She sat in front of a white wall, strategically looking frail and teary-eyed, clutching a handkerchief.

""I never thought I would have to make a video like this,"" Paige sobbed softly into the camera. ""Family is supposed to be about unconditional love and support. But recently, Justin and I have been subjected to cruel, targeted financial abuse by someone very close to us who has let wealth corrupt their soul. Because of a minor disagreement over parenting philosophies, our home is being taken away, our small business is being systematically sabotaged, and my husband is being treated like a second-class citizen by his own blood sister. All we asked for was honesty and unity, and instead, we are being thrown onto the street like garbage. Please pray for our family during this devastating trial.""

Below the video, the comments were already ablaze with outrage from distant aunts, uncles, and family acquaintances who only knew the surface-level narrative.

Aunt Clara: Disgraceful! Nora has always been arrogant since she made partner! To do this to her own little brother?!

Cousin Greg: Money really ruins people. Kicking your brother out of his house? Disgusting behavior.

Evelyn Vance (My Mother): A mother’s heart breaks to see such greed tear a family apart. Forgiveness is a virtue, Nora.

I stared at the screen, completely unfazed. If Paige and Justin thought playing the victim in the court of public opinion would shame me into submission, they had severely underestimated the woman who built a multimillion-dollar firm from scratch in a cutthroat male-dominated industry.

I didn't comment. I didn't engage. I didn't write an angry rebuttal. Instead, I took a screenshot of the post and forwarded it directly to Arthur Pendelton, my chief legal counsel.

Me: Does this violate the non-disparagement clause attached to the initial family trust agreement Justin signed when I capitalized his marketing LLC?

Arthur’s response arrived three minutes later:

Arthur: Not only does it violate Section 4 of the capitalization contract, but her specific claims of 'financial abuse' and 'criminal sabotage' cross clearly into actionable defamation per se. Shall I release the full forensic audit of the marketing agency's accounts?

I smiled quietly, watching Leo sprint across the court, intercept a pass, and drive a flawless layup into the hoop.

Me: Not yet, Arthur. Let them dig the hole a little deeper. When Justin gets desperate, he always attempts something stupid. Let’s make sure we have the shovel ready.
