Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

On Friday morning, I convened an emergency board meeting of Vance Capital Partners.

Sitting across from me was Arthur Pendelton and our chief forensic accountant, David Chen. On the projection screen behind them was a detailed breakdown of the ""lifestyle marketing agency"" Justin had purportedly been running for the past three years using five hundred thousand dollars of seed capital I had personally guaranteed through the family trust.

""It’s worse than simple mismanagement, Nora,"" David said, clicking through the slides with a laser pointer. ""Justin hasn't signed a legitimate commercial client in fourteen months. The invoices he submitted to the holding company were entirely fabricated. He was using the business operational account to pay for personal luxuries: five-star hotel stays in Cabo, designer jewelry for Paige, high-stakes sports gambling tabs, and luxury lease payments.""

""Embezzlement and corporate fraud,"" Arthur stated bluntly. ""Under state law, since you are the sole managing director of the parent entity that capitalized the venture, you have a fiduciary obligation to report this. If you do, Justin is looking at multiple felony counts carrying substantial prison time.""

I looked at the spreadsheets. For years, I had turned a blind eye, telling myself that Justin just needed time to mature, that eventually he would find his footing, that family was worth the financial bleeding. But his attack on Leo had shattered the blinders. My loyalty was to my son, and my duty was to protect him from predators, even if those predators shared my last name.

""Prepare the formal audit package,"" I instructed. ""Arthur, draft a settlement agreement. Justin and Paige surrender all claims to the North Ridge property immediately. They surrender all corporate assets, vehicles, and equipment. They sign a binding, permanent non-disclosure and non-disparagement agreement with a hundred-thousand-dollar penalty per violation. And Justin signs a formal confession of judgment acknowledging the four hundred and eighty thousand dollars he stole from the holding firm.""

""And if he refuses to sign?"" Arthur asked.

""Then file the criminal complaint with the district attorney's financial crimes division by 5:00 PM today,"" I said without hesitation.

Meanwhile, at the North Ridge house, the walls were literally closing in on Justin and Paige.

Without access to the platinum cards, their utility bills had gone unpaid. At 11:00 AM, a technician from the local water authority turned off the main valve at the street curb. An hour later, two representatives from a private repo company backed a heavy flatbed truck into the driveway to seize Paige’s Range Rover.

Paige stood on the front lawn in her designer bathrobe, screaming at the repo drivers, threatening to sue them, while neighbors peeked through their blinds, taking videos on their smartphones.

""Justin, do something!"" she shrieked, running inside to find her husband sitting on the living room floor, surrounded by piles of unpaid bills, past-due notices, and half-empty bottles. ""They’re taking my car! The water is shut off! We have no money to buy food! Call your mother! Call Nora! Beg her! I don't care what you have to say, go on your knees and beg her!""

""Nora won't answer,"" Justin mumbled, his hands shaking as he stared at the ceiling. ""She isn't bluffing, Paige. She never bluffs in business. I forgot who she was. I thought she was just my big sister who always cleaned up my mess.""

A loud knock pounded on the front door.

Paige rushed over, violently pulling it open, expecting another repossession agent. Instead, she found Arthur Pendelton standing on the porch, flanked by two junior associates carrying thick leather briefcases.

""Mr. and Mrs. Vance,"" Arthur said with polite, lethal precision. ""My name is Arthur Pendelton, chief legal counsel for Vance Asset Management. I have a document that requires your immediate, undivided attention. You have precisely four hours to review it before your lives change permanently.""
