Chapter 6 - The Cleansing of the Vultures

With Julian gone and the flashing lights slowly fading down the winding driveway, the remaining family members stood frozen in Dad’s study, looking like trespassers caught in broad daylight. Aunt Clara made an awkward attempt to step toward me, her arms outstretched in an imitation of maternal comfort.
"Oh, Elena, my sweet girl," she began, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. "What an absolute nightmare. If we had only known what that monster was doing to poor Arthur... we were so worried about you, darling. You must be completely exhausted. Come, let me make you some tea, and we can discuss how the family can help you manage all these complicated properties. You shouldn't have to carry this burden all alone."
I looked down at her outstretched hands, then met her eyes with a gaze so cold she stopped dead in her tracks.
"Where was your tea, Aunt Clara, when Dad was coughing up blood at three in the morning and I was calling every relative in the directory begging for someone to sit with him for two hours so I could shower?"
She blinked, her face burning red. "Well... you know how difficult my sciatica has been..."
"And where was your concern when Julian struck me across the face inside God's house?" I continued, stepping around the desk, my voice rising with an authority I hadn't possessed when Dad was alive. "You held his coat, Clara. You told him to make sure I gave up the keys so the family could have their rightful share."
Uncle Raymond, who had crept back into the hallway to watch the arrest, tried to clear his throat and interject. "Now, Elena, grief makes people do strange things. We were all under immense pressure. We're your blood. You can't run Arthur's empire without family by your side."
"I am Arthur's daughter," I said, pointing directly toward the front door. "And as of five minutes ago, every single person in this room who supported Julian's slander is officially trespassed from this property. If you are not off these grounds in ten minutes, Attorney Price will have the sheriff remove you for unlawful assembly."
No one argued. The realization that there was no money to charm out of me, no weakness left to exploit, settled over them like lead. One by one, they turned and filed out through the foyer, heads bowed, whispering bitterly among themselves as they hurried through the rain toward their cars.
Within fifteen minutes, the house was empty. Just me, Attorney Price, and the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner of the study.

"You handled that with remarkable grace, Elena," Price said softly, closing his briefcase with a clean snap. "Your father would have been profoundly proud of you. He spent the last months of his life worrying that his illness had left you vulnerable to their cruelty."
"He gave me the tools to defend myself, Samuel," I whispered, touching the brass key that still hung from my neck. "Now I just have to figure out how to rebuild."
