Chapter 5 - Handcuffs in the Hallway

The sound of sirens began as a faint wail in the distance, cutting through the steady drum of rain before swelling into an unmistakable, authoritative roar out on the gravel driveway. Flashing red and blue lights reflected off the study's leaded glass windows, painting the walls in dramatic, rhythmic pulses of color.

Julian panicked. He bolted toward the French doors that opened out onto the back terrace, knocking over an antique globe and sending shattered glass skittering across the floor. But he didn't even make it past the curtains. Two uniformed state troopers stepped through the doorway from the veranda, their hands resting on their duty belts, blocking his exit with absolute finality.

"Julian Vance," Special Agent Miller said, stepping behind him with a pair of stainless-steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, interstate wire fraud, elderly financial exploitation, and felony assault. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

"Get off me!" Julian thrash, his voice high-pitched and hysterical. "You don't know who I am! I built this town! My father was Arthur Vance! Elena, tell them! Tell them it was a family dispute! Tell them we can handle this privately!"

I stood motionless beside our father’s desk, holding the leather-bound trust documents close to my chest. The cut on my lip throbbed with a dull, rhythmic ache, but my mind was clearer than it had been in years. "You stopped being a brother the moment you treated Dad like an ATM and me like an obstacle to be beaten down. Take him away."

The cold click of the handcuffs ratcheting around Julian’s wrists sounded loud in the hushed room. The relatives stepped back, pressing themselves flat against the walls to avoid any association with the man they had cheered on only hours earlier at the church.

Serena sat crumpled on the floor, weeping into her designer sleeves as an investigator handed her a summons detailing the immediate freezing of all their joint bank accounts and luxury vehicles. "Everything you purchased using funds originating from Vance Construction's general ledger is subject to civil asset forfeiture, Mrs. Vance," the agent informed her evenly. "I suggest you secure private counsel immediately."

As Julian was marched through the foyer, his shoes dragging against the hardwood, he turned his head back one last time. His face was twisted in a mixture of blind rage and pitiful terror. "I will never forgive you for this, Elena! Never! You destroyed my life!"

May you like

"You destroyed your own life, Julian," I said quietly, loud enough for only him and the escorting officers to hear. "Dad just made sure you couldn't take mine down with it."

The heavy oak front door opened, letting in a gust of cold, wet autumn air, before slamming shut behind them. The house fell completely silent. The only sound remaining was the soft rustle of Attorney Price gathering the evidence folders back into his briefcase.
