Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Deceit

Julian’s face drained of color as Attorney Price stepped forward, snapping on a pair of white inspection gloves. He carefully removed the ivory envelope and held it out so the intact wax seal was visible to everyone in the room. The initial 'A.V.' stood out in sharp relief.
"Arthur Vance knew his life was drawing to a close nearly eight months ago," Attorney Price announced, addressing the crowded room. "He also realized that the accounts he built over forty-five years of honest commercial contracting were bleeding dry. This envelope contains his final recorded statement, which I will now unseal and read aloud into the record."
Serena rushed forward, grabbing Julian’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging through the fabric of his sleeve. "Don't listen to him! Julian, call our private lawyer right now! They’re setting you up!"
"Be quiet, Serena!" Julian snapped, his voice cracking down the middle. For the first time, panic broke through his arrogant facade. Sweat began to bead along his hairline, glistening under the chandelier.
Attorney Price slid a silver letter opener through the fold, unfolded the heavy parchment, and cleared his throat.
"'To my family and those who came to witness the division of my labor,'" Price read, his baritone steady and completely devoid of emotion. "'If you are hearing these words, it means my daughter Elena has kept her promise to protect the truth until the hour of my burial. To my son, Julian, who believed that my failing body meant a failing mind: I loved you enough to forgive your early mistakes, but I loved honor too much to allow your greed to destroy everything I built.'"
The room went dead silent. You could hear the faint drip of rain leaking through the old gutter outside.
"'Over the past eleven months,'" the letter continued, "'Julian systematically diverted three million two hundred thousand dollars from Vance Construction’s operating accounts, utilizing forged corporate resolutions and a falsified medical power of attorney. He believed I was sleeping in that hospital bed while he liquidated my life’s work to fund his speculative investments, offshore gambling debts, and luxury real estate in Miami.'"
Gasps broke out among the relatives. Aunt Clara pressed her hand against her mouth, staring at Julian in sheer disbelief. Uncle Raymond looked down at the Persian rug, unable to meet anyone’s gaze.
"That's a lie!" Julian roared, lunging toward the desk where Price stood. "Dad had dementia! He didn't know what he was signing! Elena manipulated him into writing that! She wrote it herself!"

One of the investigators beside Price stepped forward, blocking Julian with an iron shoulder. "Mr. Vance, I advise you to remain where you are. I am Special Agent Miller, Lead Forensic Auditor for the state division. We have spent the last three months cross-referencing your IP addresses, your signatures, and the dummy corporations registered in Delaware under your personal email. Your father didn't write those numbers. The banking servers did."
I pulled out the first Manila folder and opened it flat on the desk. "Look at it, Julian," I commanded, my voice cutting through his frantic breathing. "Look at your own signature authorizing the transfer of Dad’s emergency medical reserve fund while he was in the ICU with respiratory failure. You left him without the funds to pay for his home nurse. I had to remortgage my own cottage just to keep his oxygen tank running."
